iPad Pro 11" iPad Pro heat....

Hallo all, first post here, even tho I've been a regular lurker for 6 years. I recently for an iPad Pro, in hopes that I can leave my laptop behind and edit all my photos on it. This thing is ridiculously fast as far as manipulating 42MP raw images go, but it tends to overheat and I have a suspicion, it's related to the use of the pencil in Lightroom CC. I find it takes longer for it to warmup when one using the touch screen without the pencil. I guess running the pen with all its functions requires more CPU power than touch using your finger. Can anyone confirm this or deny this??

For now, I've devised an amazing piece of tech I use for cooling . Not very elegant or convenient but does the trick.

I have never had my 11” iPad overheat or get much more than just warm.

A freezer pack would not be an option.

Editing 42 and 50mp Raws with Lightroom will do it. Not even 4k editing with luma does it

I reserve my raw edits to my laptop or desktop. Too many sacrifices when do on an iPad. I have tried.

Now, you say overheat, but from what I've seen, theoretically when pushed the chip is designed to run all cores at 2.325GHz (2.500GHz is maximum frequency when a single core is in use) indefinitely without having to throttle further to cool - of course it will get warm doing this, but still well within safe limits... now maybe if you're in a particularly warm, humid environment (or direct sunlight) the chassis might not realistically be able to dissipate the heat to theoretical standards, but other than that, the device has pretty miraculous thermals for something which is so powerful and passively cooled!

Yeah.... Lightroom CC on iOS is a bit of a pain, but I hate hauling my laptop with me to gigs I do on the spot. And I love how fast this thing is for the most part. I'm sure Lightroom will get better. My biggest issues are not being able to specify export JPEG resolution and no batch edit.

Huh, that's interesting, I've heard of this behaviour on iPhones and iPads when they are in really hot environments (left in a car in direct sunlight on a hot day) but never just from normal use previously. I'll be interested to hear about any further investigation you do!

I have an IR temp gun and thermal camera at work, I'll torture it a bit tomorrow . My living room is definitely not a hot environment...,

I never leave home with my DSLR for any time without the laptop.

Everyone has their own habit that works for them. Apple could let the iPad do so much more but it is not their plan.

I would think so, as the case material and the thin air gap between it and the body of the device would both contribute to lower heat transfer from the device’s body to the air outside.

As for the OP’s cooling solution - any concern over condensation from overcooling the air inside? I guess it depends upon humidity there, for me I would never try such a solution.

I would stop using the ice pack ASAP (like really, asap) and instead use an external fan or coolant that gradually cools as the metal aluminum chassis and internals will warp and possible burst from the sudden change in temperature. I've had some things happen like that because of this same scenario.
