I got a chance today to test both a 12.9 and 11 IPP connected to an LG 21.5-inch external 4K monitor. They both work great. But the 11 IPP fills the monitor more than the 12.9. The black areas were a half inch wider on each side on the 12.9 than on the 11 because of the different aspect ratios. The difference would doubtless be larger on a bigger monitor. So the smaller iPad results in a larger on-screen presence. Image quality was the same. I think the aspect ratio of my external monitor is pretty typical. So for my use case, which involves using the IPP at a desk with a monitor most of the time, the 11 is the slightly better choice, especially multitasking with two apps open side by side. And it gives me more mobility away from the desk.
I get it that most people don’t plan on using their IPPs attached to an external monitor, at least not most of the time. But I thought this info could be useful for those considering it. Trackpad support is a game changer for this type of use. Maybe a future version of IPad OS will provide for full monitor support, not just mirroring. But, for now, it’s a workable setup.
