11" MBA Invaluable in Tokyo Earthquake

I live in Tokyo and going through the disaster of the earthquake, power outages, work stopping and going and stopping, public transportation outages, evacuations and a general sense of nervousness, I can say that the 11" MBA has been essential. It's low weight and size has made it easy to transport, and long battery life has allowed me to keep abreast of the situation here and keep in touch with family and friends. The day the earthquake happened, I had to run down crumbling stairwells and walk nearly three hours home, and the 11" MBA was a lifesaver in many ways. If you are ever in such a natural disaster, your MBA could be a valuable tool.

Do you plan to stay in the area, are you trying to leave? The news about the nuclear reactor is worrisome.

Putting that aside, I have just donated two hundred dollars directly to Red Cross Japan. As a minor who receives income exclusively through infrequent photography jobs, I hope to support Japan however I can.

Thank you all for your messages and support. Frank, thank you so much for your donation! Japan really needs it right now. I've lived here for ten years and have been very fortunate and Japan has been extremely good to me, and I too have donated and helped as much as possible. It is heartbreaking what has been going on.

I am leaving Tokyo tonight for the southern city of Osaka. Luckily my employer gave everyone in my office the right to work remotely until further notice, which is a big help. Once in Osaka, I'll plan my next step.

With everything that has been going on here, I really needed a break and came on MacRumors. I hope what has happened in Japan never happens to anyone else, but I have been so impressed with what an indispensable little computer the MBA has been in such a situation, that I really had to share.

I have the bigger MBA and it's an incredibly capable device. Really good to hear someone's putting it to good use! Good luck with everything over there. The footage we're seeing on British television is truly unbelievable.

Acronyc -- Glad to hear that your MBA has served you well in this monumental disaster and that you are safe. It is so horrible, it makes even the devastation Hurricane Katrina wreaked on our gulf coast pale by comparison. Things like these make us realize how tenuous our grasp really is.

I'm still in Tokyo and have to agree with Acronyc on this very issue. The 11" Air is a fantastic device to have - it fits into even my smallest shoulder bag, and I'm carrying that along with 2 portable USB drives which contain my entire archive of photography work, all my design projects, music and documents and bootable backups of my iMac and Macbook Pro. The only thing I don't have is my video library.

I carry this combination with me at all times now, safe in the knowledge that even if some disaster happened in Tokyo (fortunately nothing has yet) I'd have everything with me in a small lightweight pack that I can quickly transfer from bag to bag if and when necessary.

Regarding nuclear threats, it's predominantly the foreign community leaving Tokyo. We are actually in no danger at all from radiation here, the current levels are extremely low. Higher than normal, but still very low. You'd never know that though from reading the fearmongering being continuously spewed out by the foreign media at the moment.
