Hi all,

I have a new MBP 14' and the software updater isn't seeing the 12.1 update at all. Tried just about everything and have never really ran into a situation where an update isn't being seen. My other machines saw 12.1 shortly after release yesterday afternoon... super strange.

Any solutions for manually downloading 12.1 and updating that way?

You can try this in terminal

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.1

My 14" didn't see it either but a reboot fixed that. The command I gave is how to get a full installer.

Will the full installer wipe my machine clean? or just reinstall on top of my existing install with 12.1?

I had the same problem over the past 24 hours. Nothing worked, software update was blind to any updates. Ended up making a bootable thumb drive and installed a fresh copy of 12.1 from there. Nothing was deleted.

Instructions are here, use the --downloadassets argument when making the drive.

Anything wrong with just hitting "Get" from Monterey from the App Store? Should simply accomplish the same, right?

My experience:
waiting til 10 minutes ago since yesterday... no update showing up (MacBook Pro 16"), went today to AppStore, clicked, Preferences started "searching for update"... but endlessly without finding and downloading.

...AND... Suddenly I remembered when updating to 12.0.1 the system asked me to plug the charger, no updating on battery (was almost full).
So, I plugged MagSafe, and update was found! Downloading now.

But the advice from system didn't show after the first and only message box, and I forgot. (That could be easily fixed; let's see in next upgrade from 12.1...)

(...)
EDIT: After writing this post, I started to fiddle in Preferences, forgot I was updating (1/5 downloaded) and quitted Preferences.
No alert message, nothing.
So I started updating, again, with plugged MagSafe (and 100% charge).
NO UPDATE SHOWING. ENDLESS progress "searching for update" with animation. (Tried from Preferences and from AppStore)

Yes, that’s what I did. The package downloaded (after a few tries) - all good. Try it!

When I tried to install however, the package kept hanging at 52 mins to go. In my opinion, something on the factory installed OS was causing a problem.

So I created the bootable USB, using the newly downloaded package and went from there.

Clicking "Get" in AppStore opened Preferences update panel, not working.
Now downloading after command in Terminal. Thanks!

(...by the way: Where will the full downloaded installer appear?)

The update was pulled. I had it available but it was stuck "downloading". Rebooted, tried again and no update is available.

With all the problems we're seeing, I wouldn't be surprised if apple pulled the update.

It’s not pulled - it’s a glitch. Upon the first failed update, the update is no longer shown. Installing a fresh copy seems to be the only way forward. No data is lost, but backup first.

Looks like it’s become a thing, even down to the installer sticking at the 52 mins mark. My solution works though, thanks to @white7561
Yep. Idk if making the bootable installer without download-assets works fine too. But I always recommend using it to reduce the need to download additional files when installing. Reduce the time needed too. And as a plus the USB is good for an install disk if your os is damaged or something

This the same problem as we've all suffered above.

Some of us solved it by making a bootable usb drive, if you have one handy.

Yep, the infamous 52 mins... downloaded (twice) the full installer, tryed multiple times, tryed in safe boot... nothing worked (and 12.0.1 was installed extra clean with ipsw)... until the old good USB key solved the problem.

Have you tried to kill the process starting with "com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate" in Activity Monitor? It helped me when I had the same issue. There's a couple of good tips here: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...-monterey-12-1-with-shareplay.2327335/page-11
Hi, "5CHF" compatriot, thanks, I saw this thread but I wanted to install the update without killing a (maybe) useful process... so I went with the USB way (with MiniM1, with the AirM1 I haven't even attempted other methods: I went straight with the already created key... recovered some time lost before ;)

I have a 16” M1pro.

I’ve been suffering the glitch in various ways:
- Update not showing up in Preferences.
- Download tried from clicking “get” 12.1 in AppStore. It always opens Preferences and gets stuck in “searching…”
- Started suddenly after plugging MagSafe (perhaps needed for upgrading).
- Quitted Preferences inadvertently and all went to start point of the problem (and no alert from Preferences when quitting).
- Started downloading complete installer from Terminal (thanks to @ssls6 in the thread). Stoped for hours at 90%. Quitted.
- Mr.Macintosh web link to full installer started ok in Safari. Stopped at some point and impossible to resume; seemed “disappeared“.

Still in 12.0.1, Preferences says I’m up to date , and I need the laptop to work, now. I will try from Recovery, which seems to be the safest way… But I’d like to wait for a solution from Apple, or an explanation at least. This is ridiculously tiring

I did nearly all of the things you tried. The quickest and most reliable way IMO is to make a bootable installer, boot from that and install the 12.1 from there. This is an official Apple Support page on the subject. My laptop is for work too and I had to do it yesterday. Nothing will be deleted, but backup first.

…To make a bootable installer I should first to download “MacOS Monterey”. When I try, it doesn’t download! “Preferences” opens, instead, in “Updates”, and gets stuck. Downloading from Terminal command got stuck, also (worked normally and stopped at 90% for hours).
I could grab it from my Intel iMac, yes.
I’m fed up.
And I suspect it’s just a problem of upgrading malfunction mixed with saturated servers.

”Recovery“ in Monterey has profoundly changed, and I think getting the last OS from there is going to become popular .

I updated last night. The update was not available in the App Store updates, but clicking About This Mac>Software Update… it found it immediately.
