Hello, just got a new to me 2019 16" i9 MacBook Pro. It had 12.0.1 installed when I got it. Downloaded some apps, office, pages, etc. When I went to update to 12.4 it would download the 5GB file, start preparing the update, then soon after give an error saying the updated failed to prepare and to try again. I tried a few more times with the same results. I then booted in safe mode and tried installing it that way but same issue arose.

Please help! Not sure what to do next.

Thank you

Sorry I think I misunderstood. You're saying to erase everything and do a clean install in Disk Utility?

Boot from an external drive with 12.4 and just do a "Reinstall" of Monterey. It will install an updated copy of macOS over the previous version without actually affecting any of your apps, settings, accounts, or files.
