I am planning to buy a new computer over the summer and I'm thinking about getting a 12-inch MacBook Pro with a 19-inch widesceen viewsonic monitor or a 20-inch iMac. Portability isn't a must as I'm only in high school but it would be a bonus. When is it guesstimated that Apple will release the 12-inch MacBook and will the performance be hugely different from the iMac?

Thanks for your time,

Andrew

My guess is April, but it is only a guess. I think there will be numerous product releases to celebrate Apple's 30th B'Day.

I see the anouncement going something like this

"Thank you for coming. We are adding to our MBP range, the 12" and 17". We are also launching the MacBook....oh, and one more thing..."

the one more thing I can't guess at, but I'm going to give it a go. I believe that Apple is aiming for the home market off the back of the iPod success. The one more thing is for the home....

We have to wait and see..

I'm agreeing with jacobj, in saying that we'll probably hear about a few new products in time for the 30th anniversary. The 12" and 17" MacBook Pro seem like logical guesses, as next steps in the transition to Intel chips. Then again, that guess has as much validity to it as saying that they're definitely coming out next friday.

Well, there were strong rumors the smallest Pro notebooks (12 inch Powerbooks for now) would be discontinued.

I'm hopeful Apple might reconsider this. A 13-inch machine that looks like the MacBook Pro even if it has to have a couple features cut would still be popular.
