12" PB 1.5ghz BATTERY RETURN OR KEEP? (recall issue)

I have a last rev. 12" PB that has a recalled battery in it. It has never given me any trouble, but I figured as its one year anniversary is coming up, I might as well get the new battery for it from Apple's recall center. So it came today. Am i obliged to return the old battery or can I keep it?

I know people that have kept theirs, but if it explodes and takes your house with it Apple won't be liable.

I don't think they care that you don't return it, I think the point is that they supply you with UPS labels to do so which absolves them from any potential legal problem.

You really should return it, if only to eliminate any desire you may have to use it. There was a user here a few months ago who had one explode and catch fire...not a good idea to take that risk.

FYI, I think it was a known issue but the new battery from the recall doesn't quite fit flush with the PB 12" case. It seems to work fine but for any obsessive compulsive folks it can be a "sore thumb". You may want to see how the new one actually fits.

Warrantee issues notwithstanding, returning your old battery gets you a new battery for free!

I guess I just don't think it is going to explode. Already got the new battery and haven't even used it yet.

im in the weird situation of having 2 batteries from apple coz they took me ages to send me the first one i ordered and i moved house before it came.

so i told them and they sent me another one, and in the meantime the management at my old place forwarded me the first one.

so I've ended with 3 batteries in total, I'm gonna return my old one though.

If I were you I'd return it, 'not thinking' it'll explode is pretty naive imo...unles you're psychic

Out of the reports of battery explosions / fires, I'm pretty sure there is more than one in which a battery seemed to work fine for several years before an incident. I briefly felt the same compulsion, but I turned my battery in. I think you should do the same, just to make sure that, even if you sell it, there're none of these potentially dangerous batteries floating around.

Return it. Odds are it won't catch on fire and take you or your home with it but is it really worth the risk?
