12" PB Modem Problem

12" G-4 PB 867 running 10.4.5.

Internal modem specs:
Modem Model: MicroDash
Interface Type: USB
Modulation: V.92
SKU Name: UCJ
Hardware Version: 1.0F
Firmware Version: APPLE VERSION 2.6.6
Driver: InternalUSBModem.kext (v2.6.6)

I have been using an ethernet --> broadband --> ISP at work and Airport --> dialup --> ISP at home. Last time I used the PB internal modem was probably 18 months ago and it worked.

New office situation requires that I use dialup from the PB modem. It initially gave me a 'no dial tone error'. I turned off wait for dial tone and now get a 'modem error'. I have checked the RJ-11 on the computer, replaced all phone wires, and checked all the phone connections. The line has dial tone and all connections are good. I assume the internal modem has bit the dust.

Questions:
1) How can I diagnose the modem?
2) If the modem is dead, can I just get an Apple external USB modem?

The Apple site says the external USB modem works on computers that do not have an internal modem. Will it work on a computer with a defective internal modem?

An apology for posting to my own post, but I assume no one here knows the answers to the above questions. In light of my experience today, I'll try to donate to the knowledge base:

1) Diagnosing the modem: Took it to an Apple Store and the "genius" booted the computer from his own disk, power supply and phone line. Ran a 5 minute diagnostic test for free. In my case the modem appears to be burned toast. He asked if it is under warranty: NO. OK, repair is a flat $325 and about 1 week. I declined. "No problem". Did I mention that at 64 years old, I hate that response from sales / service personnel? LOL.

2) External Apple modem: The ($50) external Apple USB modem works on all G4 and later computers using OS 10.4.3 and later. In stock at the store. Plug it in and it shows up as "External Modem" in "Internet Connect". The "genius" kindly tried my newly purchased modem to make certain it worked.

A positive firat time experience at Apple's Santa Rosa, CA store, and now I have access to the dialup connection in my (hopefully very temporary) new office. Don't laugh; It's the only game in town!!

Jerry, it is just (as you know) painful to hear anyone having to use dial up with any Mac.

How did the modem get fried? That's weird...
