Here I thought Apple would keep the so called "Pro" line in unison by making sure the ONLY difference is the screen size but nah they went ahead and made sure the 12 Pro Max included a better main Wide camera sensor than the 12 Pro.

This is such a shady move by Apple to draw their customers into shelling out more money for the Max version. You know damn well they could have fit the new sensor into the 12 Pro but nope, let's stick the better sensor into the 12 Pro Max only since it costs more and those that actually care about camera performance will have to buy it.

What a sh!tty a$$ move by Apple!

Where does it say that the pro max has a better camer? It was my understanding that the cameras were the same

Do we know they could have fit the sensor in the smaller phone?

Well, the specs are slightly different.

It's basic Apple logic, or if you want to call it, business logic.

Just like previous features in new iPhones, they say it's supposedly "only" capable in the new iPhones but everyone knows they could have included it for previous iPhones via an iOS update. They do this so you have to upgrade to get the latest and greatest, it's not rocket science, it's just business logic to get more $$$$$.

See the picture with my post, you'll see that the 12 Pro Max has a better Wide camera sensor that will give you better shots in low light.

They said it right in the Keynote. It's also on their website and in the screenshot that the OP shared. The 12 Pro is now basically the same phone as the 12, but with a stainless steel band and a slightly better camera (telephoto lens and lidar) and double the base storage.

Between that, and the OLED being made standard on all iPhone 12...I don't see much of a reason to buy the iPhone 12 Pro over the base 12 and saving some money, or going all out for the bigger screen and better sensor with the Pro Max.
The main key difference between the normal iPhone and iPhone Pro is nerfed now that they all have OLED.

You may as well moan about why they save features for the pro phones over regular etc. It’s product differentiation and up-selling, it’s how companies make their money

So tell me what's the point of the "Pro" variant then? So that you can have two different "Pro" versions? The whole reason why Apple's Pro devices were great is because the only differences were the screen sizes, everything else was the same internally. This was great for those of us who wanted a smaller iPhone with all the benefits of it being a "Pro" device.

They might as well have called the iPhone 12 Pro Max the iPhone 12 Super Pro Max or some **** ridiculous.

Obviously they want to up-sell people to the Max. It’s another $100 for them. And there could well be technical reasons too, like extra room in the chassis etc

So the more expensive version comes with more features. Isn’t this kinda normal?

Would have been fine if they did this from the day they announced the Pro versions, you don't switch it up years later and f.uck it up for those who preferred a smaller iPhone Pro.

I absolutely agree. I wanted to go back to an iPhone with a telephoto lens, but them gimping the regular pro is a bit much. I don’t want a giant sized phone.

I would love to see differences in pictures between 12 pro and 12 pro max.

Same, I'm holding off on ordering the iPhone 12 Pro until I can see some of the differences. If it's major then I'll be holding off on upgrading till they decide to make sure both Pro models are equal.

You didn’t sign a contract to buy this phone when you bought your first pro. there was no bait and switch here. If you don’t like the features of this one, don’t buy it. Easy.

I'd say the iPhones have been the exception in that regard. Look at the MacBook Pros - the 16" is significantly more powerful.

You know, it’s pretty hard to put a larger sensor into a smaller box.

Folks on this board don’t seem to appreciate the trades that go into engineering design. If engineers don’t give you everything your heart desires, it’s not just because they’re being mean.

If it makes you feel better, note that the 12 Pro has an f/2.0 telephoto lens while the 12 Pro Max has an f/2.2. So, the 12 Pro should have a slightly advantage in low-light performance over the Pro Max. There are technical reasons for that. It’s not because the engineers hate Pro Max buyers and don’t want them to have a faster lens.

Especially after they made a point to highlight that the 12 and 12 mini will have the exact same features (sans the screen size, obviously).

There's only been 1 other year of 'Pro' models...
