Other 12 Pro Max 4K HDR video in low light

Curious to hear from others.
My 12 pro max using HDR video in low light situations comes out black. Not even restaurant dim, more light than that, and still it's very black. Switch to HDR off and boom, looks amazing. Somehow HDR doesn't work for video in lower-ish light?
 
I don't know exactly what happened but after various settings changes and restarts the strange blackness is gone.
