Apologies if this has already been asked, but what's the plan for people on the upgrade plan or having to collect instore?

The UK's lockdown begins on Thursday 00:01 am this week until the first week of December.

I had the exact same question. The mini will he out in the middle of a national lockdown. Certainly this is not an essential shop, so apple stores will be shut. Does apple have an alternative plan for upgrading?

Nothing yet. I have a horrible feeling existing IUP customers will be stiffed hard.

And no, I don't really see that many people selling their IUP phone, paying the loan back to Barclays, cancelling Applecare+ and then after all that, setup a new non-IUP 24 month interest free payment plan.

The UK thread for pre-orders is hot on discussions about the IUP programme and the consensus is that, with the stores closing, people will have to wait until December to see what their options are or as said, sell the phone, pay off the loan and use a different model to purchase a new phone.

If that’s the case they can keep their iPhone 12. I’d rather keep my current phone (and save some money) rather than going through all this hassle, not to mention the fact I find quite ridiculous that apple didn’t think of an alternative during a pandemic. I could understand it back in March when it was a new unexpected thing. But now it’s frankly ridiculous.

Bit of a first world problem dont you think ? The UK lockdown was only announced a few day’s ago ..... what do you expect Apple to do ? Bearing in mind they trade globally and the situation changes daily globally ... in the grand scheme of things you being unable to upgrade your phone is hardly a huge issue for Apple and you do have alternatives .... it’s not as though they are leaving you without a phone.

With the greatest of respect take a reality check. :)

You are absolutely correct, it is indeed a non issue which is why I will just skip this update. Nothing to be concerned about, as you mentioned I do indeed have a phone and I can definitely keep using it.

that doesn’t mean it’s the ideal solution, and probably it isn’t ideal for apple either as I suspect they will lose more than a sale because of it.
What should they do? Just what they do in the states, allow for IUP remotely (ship the phone and collect the old one).

Honestly I think they should offer this option regardless of the pandemic, I’ve always found quite annoying to have to go to an apple store in person, but that’s just a preference.

Again, this is hardly a problem, i don’t think this is a particularly important issue, especially in this period.

I think what I find most annoying is that apple always seem to care more about the American market, and the rest of the world seems to be more of an afterthought (this IUP problem is just an example, one could mention Apple Card, 5G mmWave, maps etc).

So in the UK you can’t order online and get a new iPhone in the mail and then send your old one back? All transactions for IUP are required in store? Here in the US, if things were locked down, we can still get deliveries to our house and order iPhone in the IUP program online.

Yep exactly that, you have to go in and do it in person. For such as myself who wants to join the IUP it won't be possible.. so my solution to that is taking out a credit card at 0% over 19 months and using that to finance it, hopefully the card arrives before Friday.

Dang I don’t understand why Apple won’t extend the same options we Americans have. Does it have to do with different laws there in the UK?

Probably due to market size and bargaining power. In some countries, Apple charges what they want for the devices and takes a generous cut of the currency exchange.

Is the market a whole lot lower for Apple in the UK?

The market in the UK for Apple products is massive. In terms of the iPhone market and average per person, the UK is the second largest market in the world behind the US. In total, out of 67million people in the UK, 55 million have a smartphone.
Obviously China has more iPhones than even the US but then again they have a bigger population.

Ok! So to me it would make sense fit them to offer the same IUP online that the US has.

Even if they have some reason for not normally offering mail order, they should at least offer an exception for this year.

Places like curry’s are doing a reserve and pick up service so although curry’s won’t be open you can go to the shop if you pre-order and pay for a product, Argos does the exact same thing I’m sure Apple will do a similar thing at their stores, at the end of the day Apple wants your money and I’m sure they won’t let a pandemic get in the way of relieving you of your cash 😁👍

AFAIK Apple didnt do click and collect when the stores closed during the last lockdown ..... may not change now for a 4 week closure albeit a new product is being released ....... I guess they will just stick to deliveries
