Bought the laptop in December of '08. Started getting some odd behavior a couple of weeks ago, programs quitting unexpectedly. Upgraded to Snow Leopard and things went downhill fast. Kernel Panics, programs not opening. Decided to do a "clean" install of SL and when trying to reinstall the installation failed. Brought the machine to the "genius bar" and they tried to reinstall with the same results. Best guess is the hard drive failed. Never dropped the machine or spilled anything on it. Waiting to get it back, I haven't heard of this here, anyone else have this happen?

Sure. SSDs are a new technology, and even though the storage mediums themselves are pretty solid, things happen. AFAIK, this is not a huge problem, but they do go bad from time to time.

Some things are faulty, that's what happens with any mass produced product, no matter what it is. You just got unlucky.

Some of the earlier SSD's need the firmware updated due to there controllers. Jmicron controller is one example. Most SSD's come with a 3 year warranty from what I've been seeing. So hopefully you don't lose any data or have to pay out of pocket for any replacements. Overall love my SSD way faster and still safer than conventional hard drives.

No cost to me, the Air is still under warranty through Apple Care. As far as data loss, minimal. I was able to back up most of it before the final crash. Hopefully I'll have it back by Monday.
Thanks

Did you or the Genius happen to check any of the system logs for indications of what went wrong? If so, did you find any clues?

No, remember I had already attempted a clean install and had erased the HD before I got to the :apple: store. The genius said the same thing, it would have been helpful to see the logs.
