There's white text in that search bar that I typed -- you just can't see it.

Darkmode Safari (version 16.4):
  • Need 1 or more tabs open already then open a new tab
  • Tab Mode in Preferences has to be "Compact". "Separate" mode doesn't have this behavior.
  • Seems to require the Favorites bar to be visible as well. If the search bar is white as in this screenshot and then Favorites bar is hidden (e.g. with keyboard shortcut shift-command-B) the search field will flip back to dark mode.
  • Might have something to do with my Search preferences, not sure. (I have every option in there turned off.)
  • Doesn't happen in Private Browsing mode which uses a different color anyway (search field is black as opposed to grey)

Busy day sending Feedback to Apple.
I stumbled upon this Safari issue while working on the Handoff issue I posted here as well. :/

also reported, it's been happening (here) randomly, for a while. don't think it's related to search...

Interesting. You saw this before 13.3?
And yes, definitely annoying AF. I've defaulted to hiding the faves bar for now which seems to mitigate it, at least in the ways I've encountered the quirk so far.
Thanks for reporting it too!

and still happening on the 13.4 beta 😔

Ah dang I was just popping into this thread to check on that 13.4 beta too.
I bumped into this a few times on the 13.3.1 release.
Let's see if Apple picks up that bug report and gets 'er done. :)

Same. It's more annoying when you type and it automatically deselect that field and you've to re-click it there to keep typing... Another buy since the beta of macOS 13.0

I tried to duplicate the OPs issue and was unable to using Safari 16.5 (Ventura 13.4 beta). Whether that means the bug has been foxed or something else was causing the OPs issue I can't say...

Having updated my Mac Studio to Ventura 13.4 today, I can no longer reproduce this quirk.
Seems like "bug fixed" and, if so... good job, Apple! 👍🏼
