I picked up the 13 inch today. I spent all day typing on a 2017 15 inch. This keyboard feels better---a bit softer. Whereas the 2017 sort of feels like typing on concrete, the 13 inch 2018 has a bit more of a spring.

It's still loud---I don't know what Apple considers softer or a different tone. If this keyboard caused you embarrassment in class or whatever, you're still going to be embarrassed. It's loud. Period.

If you don't like low key travel, you're not going to like this keyboard, new generation or not. It does feel to me as if it is improved. As far as reliability...I don't have any problems with the 2017 keyboard, so we'll see.

I had a 2016 and I find the new keyboard much better. The keystrokes (tiny as they are) are much smoother, and I thing a little quieter, but not dramatically so. I actually like the new keyboard a lot, though I am not much of a typist.
