ThinkSecret claims that Apple has indeed placed an order for 15.4-inch LED backlit displays targeting a June announcement at WWDC.

According to the rumor site, Apple placed an order for over 100,000 15.4-inch LED displays in April for a delivery schedule in May. This would provide adequate lead in time for a June ship date. Meanwhile, orders for 13.3-inch LED screens are reportedly being considered for 3rd Quarter roll-out.

This report echoes a similar timeframe to a Digitimes report from yesterday, but targets the MacBook Pro specifically at WWDC in June.

According to our Buyer's Guide the MacBook Pro has seen 196 days since their last update, with a historic average of 182 days between updates.

I think that at WWDC Apple will announce or release a 13" MBP to make up for the gap in size. Right now power users are stuck with getting a 15" notebook when many are very mobile and could use something more portable. Something like the 12" PB. This gap has existed for a while and they've worked with it. So if they will mend it i dont know but i think that something comes with these screens. They didn't put these new LED screens into the new Macbook update so its gotta go into something else. Why update teh macbook AGAIN right after they did this recent speedbump?

I foresee:
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) MBP
13" Widescreen LED backlit
2Gb of RAM (base)
usual options for HD
Same MBP case structure (the current case is known for that apple quality. the silver is whats associated with the pro line of mac noteboooks. They need to keep that image with these)

The only reason i can see them waiting until later this year is because they might need to focus on Leopard and the iPhone at WWDC. Also they just did MBP updates and don't want to take away the shine from that. While something is new, people buy it because it's new so they don't want to stifle that. However at the same time since this would be a major happening and not just an update to an existing product, it is justified that they would wait until a big conference to unveil it.
 
IMO people who believe this are lying to themselves, but don't get me wrong, I'd love to be wrong.

Apple would not want to cut into its sales or deal with a bunch of Apple customers calling/returning.

thats why I'm saying i don't know about WWDC It is a developers conference after all but sometime in the future i see something like this coming along. Near future
 
When things are released at WWDC do they become available to the public immediately?

I can't understand why they would make one thought, since the Macbook already exists and maybe that format doesn't do well with faster graphics. (A little faster than GMA 950 would work of course.)

Updating Macbook as soon as 13.3" LED LCDs are available makes sense since it haven't got Santa Rosa yet.

I could they could have made a case redesign where both lines had similair cases aswell.
 
Looks like they haven't worked out the LED backlighting on their 17" screens, but I honestly think this means LED backlit Macbooks, not 13" MBPs. It makes so much more sense.
 
bumped into my old boss today that has dealing with Apple on a corporate level and his comments about my purchase of a new MBP.... "surprised you didnt wait for the solid state release at WWDC".

Make of that what you will....
 
"Solid State Release" No clue what that means.

Can anyone speculate when the LED will be in the Macbook? That's what I'm waiting for.

clearly your not up on the recent rumors of solid state drives! It's kind of what people are expecting in an ultraportable.....
 
the ultraportable MBP has always been rumoured to come with a solid state HDD.

I think Apple have a problem with product differentiation right now, I'm not sure how they could fit in a regular ultraportable MBP without killin gthe high end MB.

One way they could do this is to release one with a solid state HDD, which would have less capacity than on the MB and perhaps without an internal optical drive; these features would make people need a real reason to have a pro ultraportable rather than the slightly more convenient but underpowered MB.

It would need discrete graphics though, if it has X3100 then eventual macbook updates will kill it.
 
personally i hope for somthing more like the OQO but with multi touch...

OQO is a great idea in my opinion, if apple could get a good price point theyd have a winner for sure

biggest problem with current OQO = Vista

my post was actually in response to they guy that asked what 'solid state' meant, but you posted while I was typing it up
 
Why doesn't it make sense if they just updated the MacBook's a week or two ago? That's why I think it's not going to be used for the MacBook and for something else.

there is a difference between MB, MBP and an ultraportable. Look at the pics posted above.
 
If they do this at WWDC, they're going to have a host of pissed-off buyers and 1-week open-box product returns.

I won't be one of those folks, because I'm just not at all interested in an ultraportable, but this rumor about a UP at WWDC makes me question some of Apple's recent judgement calls---starting with iPhoneWorld 2007. Then, 1.5x the normal update time on new machines, delivering (sometimes) negligible updates (e.g., MacBook), changing the company name, delaying the OS in favor of the new gadget (which makes perfect financial sense for them but makes a strong statement about priorities at the same time).... Shouldn't they just call the next version of iLife/iWork "08"?

If they introduce an ultraportable at WWDC, they would be well advised to call it something other than "MacBook Pro". Associating the new product with the MBP line won't sit well with some recent buyers (& especially recent switching buyers) who may have otherwise opted for the UP. Calling it an entirely new product line would be technically moot but psychologically relevant.
 
Surely any introduction of ultra-portable would be a new product and not a MBP lite. Hence I fail to see why anyone would be ticked off.

Well, that's exactly what I mean. If they market it as a totally new product, not so many folks get upset. If they associate it with the MBP line, like a lot of forum posters have been doing, it will strike some buyers as sandbagging.
