I have 13" Macbook Pro mid-2010 with 8 GB Ram and 1 TB SSD - Kind of exhausted all upgrades possible. I currently have Viewsonic 21" monitor which needs an upgrade.

I would like to have 32" monitor, possibly 4K to future-proof.
I can then use 21" in vertical mode with 32" 4K monitor - dual monitor setup.

Is this setup viable? I have heard conflicting news that display port that comes with this MBP can only support 2560 by 1660
Also mentioned on Apple set: https://support.apple.com/kb/sp583?locale=en_US

Anyone has this or similar setup working with mid-2010 MBP?
My budget is $500 but can stretch if right configuration.

Appreciate comments and recommendation for monitor setup and any other accessories required.

The GeForce 320M can't drive a 4K monitor, you might want to look into upgrading your MBP if you really want a 4K monitor. The late 2013 models are the earliest ones that have 4K support.

Does it mean that I cannot use 4K resolution but still use scales down 2560 by 1660? OR i cannot use it at all.

MBP upgrade at this time is out of budget but hopefully I may do in future. but I definitely don't want to invest in monitor for another 4-5 years.

You're limited to 2560x1600, you can't do 4K. I'd rather just spend $150-200 on a bigger 1080p or 1440p monitor than on something you can't take full advantage of.

As others have said.. you're wasting your money on a 4k display that won't be outputting 4k anyway. By the time you upgrade your machine to handle a 4k display, the display you bought will be cheaper and there might be better displays for the same price i.e. 5k or 8k displays.

Thanks for the response.

From Best Buy, I have short listed below and yet to decide :)
1. Samsung U28E590D 28" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) - $399
2. Acer CB281HK 28" 4K UHD FreeSync (3840 x 2160) - $329 On sale (Orig: $399)
3. Asus PB277Q 27" LED (2560 x 1440) - $317
4. AOC Q2778VQE - 27" Quad HD (2560 x 1440) - $261

Any suggestions or better options?
Even though (1,2) are 4K, I think they are cheaper and I can still use 2560 x 1440 instead of native 4K.
(3) looks good too, but is it worth saving just $80 and give up features of (1/2)..?

I guess it's preference. I would probably just buy the 4k monitor. People on here tend to look for good value which is great. I would even consider buying a used 27" quad hd screen and continue saving for a better setup.
