I'm using my M1 Pro 14 inch MBP in clamshell mode with wireless mouse and keyboard. When I'm done working or want to take a break to come back later, I'm trying to make the MBP sleep by clicking on Apple Logo in top left > sleep (but I want to leave it connected in clamshell mode so I can just come back and wake up with the magic keyboard to continue working).

However, when I click on sleep it does one of the following:

1. Display turns black (as though MBP has gone to sleep and display is on with no input) but only for a second, before the desktop reappears.
2. Once I've tried sleeping a few times and only (1) above happened, the next time I click sleep, it genuinely seems to go to sleep. I monitor it for maybe 60 secs and it seems to still be asleep. However if I return to the computer 10-15 mins later, it's been woken up again and the display is still on.

How can I fix this without having to keep disconnecting the MBP from clamshell mode?

It’s in clamshell mode, which means the lid is closed the entire time and the computer is being displayed on my external monitor. I want to be able to put to sleep and wake up at will whilst in clamshell mode. Your link is just to sleep and wake normally, which is not what I am referring to.

I hope you won’t mind me butting in but perhaps you can answer a question for me? When your mbp is asleep in clamshell mode how do you wake it? Is it any key on the external keyboard or the id key? I cannot seem to find the answer anywhere!

Yes, it’s pressing a key on the external keyboard.
Clicking the space bar key or any key on the external keyboard works if you are only using one monitor, but I’m working with 2, and I have to use my mouse to click in each monitor for the MBP to wake.

I am also using my MBP in clamshell mode with an external monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse.

I have noticed that any slight motion of the mouse or changes to the Mac (connected peripherals) can wake it. And with slight motion I do mean slight motion. Sometimes I bump myself against my desk (not hard) and my Mac wakes up.

Not sure if this is helping you but maybe you move your mouse somewhere else after you put your Mac in sleep?

There is command you can use to see the reason why your mac has been woken.
I used this to troubleshoot a similar problem years ago.

I don’t know what the specific command is on Monterey but you can either Google it or wait for someone with the knowledge to chip in.

This refers to Catalina, but it might still be useful:
