I have an aging XS Max with 78% battery health and Applecare+. I’ve been holding onto it with a plan to upgrade this fall.

I took it to Apple to get the battery serviced in the meantime, and they said they couldn’t service it or replace it because they don’t have any stock of XS Max anymore. They offered to exchange it for a 14 Plus instead.

Initially, I didn’t want this trade, because I didn’t want to go from a flagship “pro” phone to an entry level model. But then I started looking at specs, and it seemed to me that the 14 Plus equaled or slightly excelled in every spec vs XS max, I’m guessing because it’s a few years more recent.

Is this a reasonable offer from Apple? Is there any way the 14 Plus would be a downgrade?

I know these are both old phones—I have money saved up and a plan to get the 17 Pro Max in Oct. Thank you!

The 14 Plus I would think would be an overall upgrade compared to what you have, however, due to the cost to do that I'm assuming, I wouldn't since you are still planning to get the 17 PM later this year. If you think your current phone can make it to the fall I would do that. Would suck to spend a few hundred dollars on a phone just to get you through 8 months.

I'd take the trade if it were me. Do you have to pay anything to swap? If not go for it.

They’re offering to do the trade for free, since I have AppleCare+ and the battery replacement should be covered. I’m thinking I’ll go ahead and say yes.

Battery experience should be vastly improved, and otherwise it seems like it will be pretty similar if not an upgrade, certainly enough to tide me over for 10-11 months.

Thanks for the replies!

The 14 Plus is better in every way. Not sure why you refused the upgrade. Usually, the regular model clearly beats the Pro model from two generations ago. You’re comparing a 2018 “Pro” with a 2022 non-Pro.

I'd take it in a heartbeat. The 14 Plus will also have some additional trade-in/resale value come September over your XS Max.

If its a no cost trade to you, absolutely you should do it. That's a good deal since that 14 Plus will be worth a lot more on trade in this fall (if you do trade ins).

It’s better in every way. The 13 PM is the first really good ‘pro’ model and the first phone that could compete with the 14 plus.

I would have loved to have gotten an offer like that.

I was going to say exactly this, even if it was slightly worse (it’s not, like at all, expect ergonomically) you’ll get better trade in value when you go to buy the 17.

Ask how much more a 15+ would be.
if u would use it as long as your XS i guess it makes more sense cos of USB C and camera
