Hey, folks! The "other" category on my Early 2011 mbp is out of control. My Crucial SSD 240 gb is reading that it has 140 gb in other.

Screenshot 2015-03-09 10.49.21.png

I have tried the following to reduce its size:
- restarting my computer, both by "restart" and "shutdown"
- using OmniDiskSweeper, Disk Inventory X, and WhatSize to scan my SSD looking for large files. All remaining files make sense.
- re-indexing Spotlight using the appropriate Terminal Command (sudo mdutil -E /)to ensure the readout is accurate
- turning off local "snapshots" made by Time Machine. They were saving to my HDD, and once I turned off my snapshots, the HDD deleted the snapshot backups. My SSD seems to remain unaffected by turning off the local snapshots.
- running Disk Utility repairs to repair permissions, although it doesn't seem like that's something that's needed
- poring over this site (Pondini.org) and checking through its various tips for clearing up space

Nothing has worked to clear up the bulk of the space.

Something of note:

When I ran WhatSize, I ran it as an admin. When I do this, it shows the following:

However, once the file is expanded, it shows 0 kb on everything.

When I try to empty this "trash" file, it refreshes and goes from the 60 gb to 0 kb. So, that's not working either!

Other than reinstalling Yosemite, I'm completely at a loss as to what to do. Any help is so much appreciated! I gotta get this space back!

Thanks, folks!

Try this:
  • Open the terminal app.
  • sudo find / -name .MobileBackups.trash
You should see the path of where it is located. If you don't see it then don't processed to the next steps. You may need to do a clean reinstall of OS X.

If you do see the path, then in the terminal app:
  • cd <path shown in "sudo find" command">
  • sudo pwd
Make sure you are in the correct directory as the next command can wipe out your whole HD if you are in the wrong directory.
  • sudo rm -rf *
This should clean out the .MobileBackups.trash folder.

A friend of mine JUST sent me a similar thread and it worked beautifully.

Wow, thanks so much! Down to 80 gb of "other". Bam!

Glad you are fixed up. Just curious, do you happen to be using Crashplan for backup? Myself and other have had this happen due to Crashplan app updates.

Yes! I do use CrashPlan.

Are you still utilizing it or did you switch apps?

Interesting. When this first happened to me months and months ago I submitted a bug report to Crashplan and sent them links to the threads here and they promised they would fix it. Obviously they haven't.

Nope... I dumped them and use the backup app Arq with to Amazon's S3 servers.
