Hi guys, I've tried to research this but the information I've found isn't complete.

From my understanding, to get 1440p resolution on a late 2012 Mac Mini, you need to use the mini-Display Port.... but mini-Display Port to what? The Dell monitor I have supports 1440p over HDMI (which one thread indicated means it'll be okay with just HDMI). If that doesn't, will Mini-Display Port to HDMI do the 1440p?

Does your Dell Monitor have full size Displayport? I use MDP to full size DP for mine after connecting to my Thunderbolt hub. If you only have HDMI you'd have to use Thunderbolt to HDMI 1.3 (but 2.0 would be better I think).

It does have a full size display port but I use that for my gaming computer, because it runs 144hz. I don't expect the Mac Mini to do 144hz but I want 1440p.

The 2012 Mini won't do 2560x1440 using HDMI and I've tried that. With MDP-to-HDMI it should be able to do 1440p at 60Hz, but you would need an "active" adapter or cable. The people on this forum who have asked about this have not returned with a response when given this advice so I don't know if it worked for them. I have an Amazon Basics adapter (non-active) which works with a 1080p monitor or TV but not with a 1440p monitor (there may be an Amazon Basics active adapter but at the time I bought it, there wasn't one). Check the comments section of the adapter/cable you buy to see if people have it working at 1440p.

macOS officially offers 3440x1440@50Hz on the Late 2012 mini, but only via TB (DP).

How about 1600@50Hz using switchres?
With 1440 requiring to go down to 50Hz already, I’d expect you’d need to lower that even further for 1600, maybe down to 44 or something like that.

Depending on your personal preference, that may still be sufficient, provided the monitor supports it. Can’t give you guidance for SwitchRes, though.

If you have a 2012 Mini and you want 1440p, you MUST use a Minidisplayport (Mac end) to Displayport or MiniDisplayport (display end).

That's about all she wrote.

The technical limitation isn't your mini but it's HDMI. use MiniDP/DP instead.

Do you know what the maximum refresh rate (frequency) is at 2560x1600 over DP?

Would this resolution make the text on a display as clear as a hi-dpi display in Mojave?

I'm able to go up to 2160p at 30hz over DP. Not sure how to bump it up to 60hz if thats even possible.

1440p @ 59 Hz via DP on my Late 2012 i5 Mini w/ 16GB RAM running 10.14.3 and paired with a Dell U2518D monitor.

60hz Doesn't seem to be possible with the IntelHD4000 but if you find a way (hack) let me know. My wife uses my old Mac mini 2012 i7 connected to a 4K Dell monitor.. unfortunately at 1440p..

Got it, after a few days I'm actually completely happy with 4k @ 30hz so I'm not really looking for a way to increase to 60hz. It took about a day to get used to 30hz but I really don't notice it now.

Your wife might want to try my settings. Under System Preferences > Display if you hold down "option-alt" key while selecting the "scaled" display setting then MacOS will show you all possible resolutions including 3840x2160.
