1440p scaling / HiDPI

I wouldn't thing there are enough pixels on a 1440p monitor to make HiDPI a viable option (which is presumably why it's not offered)
Personally, I find 1440p pretty much the perfect resolution for those size monitors so I'm slightly surprised you find it unusable - what sort of resolution are you looking for?

I think the only option for you will be the SwitchResX. I was able to enable HIDPI mode for my Thunderbolt Display connected to the iMac 27 5k Late 2015 without even disabling SIP. I think for some Macs you'll have to set the custom resolutions for your connected display. You'll have to disable SIP for that. What is your hardware?
If the display is 1440p, 2560×1440 is its native resolution.
You can't "make the pixels smaller". They are what they are.
Seems to me that if you "forced it" into HiDPI mode -- in which 2 pixels are used in place of one, both horizontally and vertically, you would end up with a working resolution of only 1280 x 720.

If you want greater resolution than 1440p, you have to go to a display that is 3840×2160 (UHD, Ultra HD, 4K, 2160p).

Macbook Pro 13" 2015 with a Dell U2515H.
I am having a problem with SwitchresX, I can't get 1080p resolution on it, when I make a costume resolution it says it is invalid. However, strangely it does let me set it to 1680x1050 in HiDPI, I'm guessing this is because of the MBP's screen ratio?
I have tried RDM and QuickRes, but they don't offer 1080p either.
SPI is disabled.
In system preference -> displays, holding "Option" key and then click "scale". All available resolutions (including the HiDPI option) will shows up, and just pick whatever you want. In your case, 1280x720 HiDPI should be the best option for clearity, but that will greately reduce the working space. You may try other resolution, but they usually looks burry.
