I have a 17" Powerbook and I don't understand what I am supposed to notice in the new 15" Macbook Pros with the same resolution. I have seen them in person and I can't tell the difference. Does it feel like you have more space in a new 15" compared to the 15" Powerbook? SO its just smaller pixels and thats it, everything just looks crispier? Am I supposed to feel like I am on a 17" Powerbook when I am on a new 15" Macbook Pro.

They should feel/look about the same, all that changed is more pixels per screen.

Yes, the smaller pixels will enable you to have the same amount of screen real estate on the 15" MBP as you have on your 17" PB. The stuff on the screen will appear smaller due to the smaller pixel size, but you'll be able to have just as much info on the screen.

and you might need stronger reading glasses... ;)

I'll be doing essentially the same thing, going from 17" 1440x900 to 17" 1680x1050.

control-scroll is my savior. I previously used the Universal Access key combo for screen-zoom, but thought the new zoom is easier (and keeps UA settings separate).
