Sorry if this is obvious I've been wondering why does the optical drive on the 15" and 17" powerbooks/macbook pros look different. The 15" has it more or less in the center (hight wise) whereas the 17" has it higher up. On the PowerBooks I thought this may simply be because the 17" is thinner, but the MBPs are now the same thickness (or rather "thinness")

They don't use the same drive. The 17" has an 6x dual layer drive while the 15" has a 4x. I believe the 15" and the 17" have never had the exact same optical drive.
