I've heard the 17" MBP C2D displays are nicer than the 15" displays and am wondering if its just because the 17" displays use different manufacturers than the 15" displays for the C2D MBP.

15" use AU optronics, Chimei and Samsung - though most are AU now it seems. 17" uses LG-Philips (0962) and ? (0961).

Does anyone know the difference between the 09C62 and 09C61?
I have my original MBP C2D 17" with a 0962 and it shows a manufacturer code 00000610.
My replacement MBP C2D 17" has a 0961 but the same manufacturer code.
Both were manufactured on C05DFF00.

Also is there a way of telling what date a Mac was manufactured.

The manufacturer's code may not mean anything, because for the 15" we also have a 09C60 and 09C61 code (along with 09C57). What I mean is the codes for the 17" may not correlate to the codes on the 15".

As for the difference, it is quite safe to say that bigger does not equate better, it is just a different manufacturer.

The LG-Philips panels for the 17"s are said to be the best.

You can tell the week of manufacture from the serial, for instance mine is W8643XXXXXX, it is a week 43 machine.

I feel dumb. Every time I look up my display, all I get is "LCD Display" in about my mac. Where the hell do I find the actual panel manufacturer?
