Anyone else notice how few colors these things are able to display?

just for a point of refrence, what are the current 15" and 17" MBP's display specs? how much do these displays consume?

How big a problem would that be though? only 262k colors. I don't notice that much of a difference, if any. Of course, I'm not looking at photos right now either.
Enormous problem.
Go into your display prefs and start messing with the colors.
You'll understand soon enough.
I was doing that... but I realize I was looking at the wrong one.
(I have two displays, so I was changing one to thousands of colors and looking at the other to see the difference.

How much power do current LCD panels consume?

That prompted me to change my settings to 256 Colors - brings back fond memories of my old beloved Macintosh IIsi. Ah, browsing the internet with only 256 colors - connected through a pokey 28k modem.
Just so you guy know, the current displays are also only 262k colours.
Our members seem to turn a blind eye to the fact that there is a K on the end of that number.

The current crop of MBP screens are 262K panels.
Are laptop screens even capable of millions of colours?
My MBP has a millions setting too. What happens is the graphics card now sends the signal down to the monitor as "millions of colours", but the trouble is the monitor is only capable of rendering 262 thousand of them.
if you hook it up to an external monitor you will probably see a diff as you toggle between the two, but on the laptop's screen you don't see anything at all. It'd be as though your display is permanent stuck in "thousands of colours".
Still the Samsung looks fairly nice. At least from an angle it shows no uneven backlighting...
All Macbooks, and any computers/screens Apple sells can display millions of colors, and have done so for many years. Only screens they sell with low color reproduction is the iPod [65k]

Apple buy the panels and somehow they magically perform better than they are specced for?
I've just fired up Photoshop and called up the colours picker.
Switching between Millions and Thousands shows an appreciable difference.

At best all you have proved is that the Powerbooks have superior displays to the Macbook Pros.
well MBP has 6-bit panels instead of 8-bit... so through dithering they can simulate "millions" of colours (16.2 precisely) instead of 16.7 million like an 8-bit display.
So the question is, would a 6-bit LED backlit display + greater colour gamut = 16.7 million?
