Just got a mid 2023 subject. The 2 (only) USB C ports are so close together that only one can be used.
Plugging anything into one of the ports precludes anything being plugged into the other port.

IOW, this computer was designed to have only ONE (1) useable USB C port.

What kind of cable do you use to take the space of two USB-C ports? The gap between the ports on the MacBook Air is more than enough to use both at the same time

I don't use a cable, I plug in either a USB C thumb drive or a wireless mouse receiver.
But that's interesting, what manufacturer's cable and it's length can fit in both ports at the same time?

All my USB-C and Thunderbolt cables have more than enough space to be connected at the same time, but I have to admit I never used a thumb drive, they probably take more space.

It was dumb from Apple to put both ports on the same side anyway, but I guess you should look into a dongle or an extension to avoid this issue

You always have that issue with thumb drives on laptops since they moved to usb-c unfortunately. Its a shame they haven't put a usb-c port on the other side, but there's more than enough space between the ports to use them both at the same time assuming you're not putting extra-wide things in to each one at the same time!
