15" MBP - Worth how much?

Anywho...A friend of mine is uber upset that his top o' the line 15" MBP is now outclassed. He wants a 17"

He's looking to sell the 15... Specs are maxed out everything, RAM, 100GB 7200 hard drive, 2.1 processor. Still has the box, no blemishes, extra battery, Apple Care, etc. What is a realistic price he can get for the machine?

Search ebay (not sure you would find a MBP 15", but give it a try) try also searching in the Apple Online Store for refurbs.

Maybe $100-150 less than the original price would be reasonable. I mean, it's your friend, and you are sure you are recieving a good product.

Just check it has no whine and that it is not getting very hot (more than normal). Because the ones build in the past weeks seem to have less possibilities of having glitches.

And why would your friend consider a 15" MBP outdated? I mean, you sacrifice a little speed for size. Maybe he likes having a bigger screen, but saying that the 15" MBP is outdated is way to crazy.

No no, it's not for me to buy... He is looking to sell on eBay/forums.

He likes the most current things... I told him the 15" wasn't outdated, but he wants the DL drive and larger screen.

A sealed, maxed-out MBP 2.0 GHz is about to sell on eBay for just under $1900. That's about a $600 loss. Your friend can expect a similar hit.

A maxed-out 2.0 GHz MacBook Pro is closer to 3000 dollars; a stock 2.0 GHz one costs 2500 bucks. Something here is fishy...

...I agree with an above poster; a 200-dollar hit is probably about right.

Given that the 2.16 17" MBP goes for $2800 retail ($2400 refurbished), I would think that your friend would get at the most $2600 for his USED MBP (even with the upgraded Hard Drive and factoring about $200 for AppleCare but not including the battery or the extra RAM).

BTW, tell him to take out the extra 1GB RAM from his 15" MBP. It'll work fine in a new 17". There's no way he'll make back $300 (the cost for the extra 1GB chip at the Apple Store).

I would think you'd have to configure it using an OEM RAM price rather than Apple's exhorbanant fee, as most consumers on this board at least are too saavy to pay Apple $300 for a 1GB stick of RAM.

But how about friends of consumers on this board? I assumed that money isn't that much of an object if he so easily is willing to sell his relatively new 15" MBP at a loss just so he can get the 17" MBP.

My guess. The guy paid $3650+tax for his 15" maxed-out MBP ($2500+$300(2.16 upgrade)+$300(extra 1GB RAM)+$100(Hard Drive upgrade)+$350(AppleCare)+$100(extra battery). Assuming 6% tax, the total cost comes close to $3900! No way he gets even close to that selling it on eBay. I would think he would incur a loss of $1000 (or more) on eBay, esp. consider the crazy fees there would be on an item like this.

Why not try MR market place. I think you`d find better prices here than on ebay. Give ebay a try too with a good enough starting price. So you dont get it sold for less than you wanted.

Yeah... If he does decide to sell now, I'll suggest for him to register here and offer it to the good folks of MR. I configured this machine for him, and he hasn't really even used it that much.

Ok, so does $2,800 sound good for these specs? This would be not including the extra 1GB RAM and battery. Does include all original boxes/manuals:

2.16GHz Intel Core Duo/256MB, 1GB 667 - one slot, 100GB Drive@7200rpm, SuperDrive (DVDRW/CDRW), AppleCare, etc...

To buy new with that configuration, it would be about $2,950. So it's about $150 off...
