This morning when I tried installing C&C Generals, my superdrive spun the disc, made some weird noises and then spat it out.

I followed it up with another DVD movie, same result.

I put in a regular music CD, it spat it out.

I put some blank media (CDR) in and it spat it out.

Has anyone encountered this before? Is it fixable, or is it time to envoke my Applecare Warranty?

Well How old is the drive? How many burns/reads have you used it? Did it sound as if the disc was being read or a quick in/spin a few times and out again?
If yes to all, call Apple and from what I've read on the drives they don't last as long as some may think they should. Have you gone through and repaired permissions? Try the little things first just to make sure. I'm sure Apple will take care of you very well.

I got the computer in October. Its a latest Rev PB.

There's no real spinning, there's a subtle "Mmmmph" 3 times from the drive before it ejects.

All permissions have been repaired. Rebooted the machine. Can't seem to find any problems on the software end.

This has been brought up on the Apple site as well and for the iMac some can't get a true max burn speed from the SD. I'd call and get it fixed (with both) mine works great in my iMac but I guess it's that 50/50 thing with these drives
My first iBook had a drive problem (as other problems) and in the end it wouldn't give up the HW test disc at the Apple store, they were great and gave me a new one at that point. Hope you get things fixed before the xmas season is done.
