Hey!
I´ve got a friend who by accident deleted 1500 photos from her harddrive. Can someone recommend a good freeware program to recover the files.

just kidding :D

Actually it´s a friend. :) She and her husband and their to kids where on vacation and when she came home she thought she would give iphoto a try. I´ve never used iphoto (prefer photoshop and bridge) but as i understand it she deleted the photos in iphoto believing that it wouldn´t delete them from the harddrive.
It´s my old computer though so i promised i´d help them out.

If you delete any images from within iPhoto it wont actually delete them from the hard drive. Have a look in your friends home folder > Photos > iPhoto and the original images should still be there!

Yeah, it shouldn't delete the photos.

Go to the list of albums and such on the left side of iPhoto. At the bottom should be a trash bin. Go into it and see if the 1500 photos are in there. If they are, move them back to the Library.

Deleting doesn't actually get rid of them. If she emptied that trash bin, THEN she has lost her photos.

If she did delete her photos, then yes, tell her to stop using her computer until she uses Data Rescue. This will ensure that she doesn't overwrite her photos in the harddrive.

I tried iphoto and from what she has told me it seems like she emptied the trash bin. So i guess data resque would be a good option. That costs 99 dollars though but considering 1500 holidayphotos are at stake thats not so expensive... She even talked about taking the harddrive out and sending it away somewhere so she seems kind of desperate...

Invent a time machine, go back to the day before you, er, I mean your friend, deleted the photos, backup the photos.

Now come forward in time and restore the photos from the backup.

If inventing the time machine is going to be a stumbling block then I suggest you start backing up on a regular basis today so a future you won't need to invent the time machine to recover the photos you'll delete soon.

Seriously, backup is easy. Backup is S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedure). Backup is smart. Do it and don't whine that it is hard to do. If you can't do it by hand then get a good automated backup program like Deja Vu (check Version Tracker for the many available) and set it to backup your computer each evening. Oh, and get an external hard drive to backup to, don't backup to your main drive in another folder - that is silly stuff.
