Got the 16" ( base model 10/16/16/512 ) yesterday and ( initially transferred everything from my 14", but then did a reset and set up as new ) my normal operating temps are around 41-43 C, and that jumps to 46-48 pretty quick when opening apps, but then falls back to around 44 just as fast ( ~ 10 seconds )

For me normal operating temps refer to :

- About 5-6 Firefox tabs open ( One tab running You Tube )
- MS Outlook in the background
- Dark theme ( always )

I'm also observing temps hover around 41 when the laptop is (supposedly) idling, i.e. I'm not actively using it ( but the browser tabs are still open, MS outlook also running )

Apps installed ( for now ) :

-iStats
-MS Office
-Firefox

The laptop itself doesn't feel warm at all, but neither is it 'ice cold' ( I think I read a few posts stating theirs' does )

Also, with the same exact set up, the base 14" runs about 2-3 degrees cooler.

Just got me wondering if this is normal ?

Didn't you post a similar thread earlier? If it wasn't you then the short answer is:

Silicone lottery. No two chips are identical in terms of power consumption and heat output. Even if both chips came from the same wafer. Also, there is a thing with binned chips or fully fledged chips.

That said, the jump is not high enough for you to worry, unless you are comparing to the 14". In which case, also design of the 14 v 16 affects heat dissipation. Although the theory should be the 16" should be cooler due to higher surface for heat dissipation.

Nah, my first post on this issue..

I suppose I drew the short straw with the silicone lottery here!

Did you have indexing going on with your 16"? That would keep it a little warmer. It can go on for a day or so.
