Colors at the left and right edges of my monitor are distorted. If I bring a white window to the edge, roughly half a centimeter of that window gets a bluish tint.

Is this normal? It doesn't happen on my 16" Intel MBP.

Yes it’s normal. Mini-LED doesn’t extend to the edges. This is true with iPad Pros with the display. Both my iPad Pro and 16” MacBook Pro have that thin line. If I find the article I read last year I’ll link it.

It's the first thing I see when I look at the Apple Store display models... it's such a glaring defect that I'm surprised more people aren't put off by it.

Its either accepting miniLED as it is and live with it or risk playing backlight/other deffect lottery with M2 Macbook Air display panels.

Well, Apple could just improve it and add additional backlighting around the edge... as it stands it just seems like an odd choice of cost saving. It's far from impossible. Side by side with my M1 Air, in a brightly lit room, I found the Air more pleasant to look at, and I was not expecting that at all.
