160G notebook HDs, any problems?

Hi,

I was planning to purchase either the Hitachi or Seagate 160G notebook drives, (the 5400RPM Perpendicular ones), but while browsing through newegg, I noticed a lot of really bad reviews (ie: people having lots of HD failures). I was just curioius whether this was the norm; are there a lot of people out there having problems with these drives? Here are the reviews:

Looking at your previous posts, it appears that you have a 17" MBP...is this the machine you're buying for? If so, you need be sure you're looking at SATA drives, not ATA drives.

it is, but I would assume that both ATA-100 and SATA drives would experience similar types of problems. I could be wrong though!

I'm going to be purchasing one soon for my macbook, probably the Hitachi as it's cheaper and has the same warranty as the Seagate: 5 years. Also, since apple is using the hitachi in their own machines, I feel a bit better buying it . As apple is using it, I'm really not too worried about it failing, I think the reviews are usually from people who have had problems and not all the people who think the drives are great. Also, all the reviews on the SATA (or at least the majority) seem to be great, so that is another factor.

I have had my 160GB Macbook Pro for about a month now and have had no problems.

AFAIK, Hitachi Travelstars only have a three-year warranty.

That's not to say they're bad drives (I think quite highly of them), but I don't want people buying using incorrect information.
