I seem to have this odd problem with my Apple Studio Display, and my new mac mini. I have an old 20" Apple studio display and it is not working at is Native resolution of 1680x1050, I get pixelation brake up of the monitor. But if I use a different resolution say 1600x1000 the monitor works fine. The monitor is hooked up with the Apple ADC to DVI block, then I use the DVI to HMDI connector which comes with the mac mini.

I have tried the 20" monitor with my old G4 mac mini and the Apple Studio display work fine at it native resolution, so it's not the monitor, I have also tried an old 17" Apple studio display with the new mac mini and that work fine as well. It's just seem the be the resolution at 1680x1050 which is coursing the problem.

Anyone here got any ideas?

Has it always done that, or was it working fine and this is a new thing?
It looks a bit like what I've seen with fried GPU's (or ones that were on their way out) but it seems totally localised to the website, the dock, menubar etc are fine, so I don't think it's that. Does it ever get into those areas, or is it just within windows? Does it happen in all apps, or is it just safari?
Can you boot into windows or any other OS, see if you get the same results there? Could be a software issue, rather than a hardware one. Any other displays to test the converter with, just to eliminate that?

It seem to do it to any part of the screen that has motion, mouse movement, scrolling, window movement. But it's only intermittent for a second or two and it rectifies itself. As I said before I have tested the monitor with an old G4 Mac Mini with a DVI port and it works fine at 1680x1050 res, but as soon as I connect it up to the new Mac Mini using HMDI it does not work at it's native resolution.

Have you tried using a mini Display Port to DVI connector? you can probably pick one up pretty cheap on monoprice/amazon/ebay etc.

Could be the graphics card drivers. You could try booting from an external drive with a clean (or just different, i.e. not cloned from the Mini's boot drive) install of OS X on it. If the issue goes away then you just need to reinstall the OS or at the very least copy over the graphics related kexts and frameworks.

Well that is what I was thinking. I have just installed a new SDD, and I did a clean Lion install downloaded from Apple servers, at the time I had my 17" Apple Studio display connected to the Mac Mini.

Ok I have just tried to boot into windows 7 all I got was a blank black screen, it did not even turn on, what the hell is that all about. I think if there was a hardware problem with the Monitor, or Mac mini then it would reproduce this problem at any resolution, which leaves me to think it a driver problem and not a Hardware problem.

What do you think?

I have my mini connected to a samsung monitor thats 1680x1050, using a cable thats hdmi to dvi, and I'v never had a problem like that!.

*edit* mine has the 6630M graphics.

Right. I have managed to boot into windows 7 from my Mac mini today using my 20" apple monitor and the native resolution in Windows 7 works fine so it cannot be a hardware problem, so it has to be a software problem. But how do I go about fixing this issue. I have looked on Apple website for display drivers but there are none for the New Mac Mini.

Anyone got any ideas, because I am at a loss.
