With the release of the new iPad, I would hope Apple lowers the price of unsubsidized iPhone's (which will lower the price of subsidized and privately sold iPhones as well)

With it running on AT&T's 3G network could it be possible it could make phone calls in the future?

I am aware that both have different components

I would put $20 down that the non-3g iPad still costs more to manufacture than the 16gb iPhone 3GS

the price is a little high~~~
i am so poor~~~:(

I certainly can't afford to go out and buy one right now, but i have to say it's priced reasonably. i fear that given the choice, many people will be unable to justify buying an iPad over an iPod Touch or iPhone

Huh? My friend just bought her iPhone 32GB 3GS for $299. $599 is for off contract I believe.

199/299 16gb/32gb for those eligible for "full upgrades"
399/499 for those eligible for "partial upgrades"

$599/699 is the no contract price for the 16GB/32GB phones.

The iPad will only appeal to a certain select market. It's really a trojan horse with Apple. If they can get the majority of book publishers on board (aka get all the college book publishers on board), this device will fly off the shelves.

However, with Apple probably demanding a 30% cut of the already thin book publishing profits, many book publishers will be reluctant to go into business with Apple.

eBooks are the key to the iPad on whether the device will reach the mainstream.

actually I like that way of seeing it. I already thought of iPad as an unnecessary addition for me. Generally I suppose it could be a competent media device cum kindle killer.

I'm not so sure of that. Miniaturization of components typically adds a lot to the cost of production. With the iPhone, Apple has to fit a whole bunch of "stuff" into a very tight space, meaning many of the components have to be manufactured specifically much smaller (connectors, chips, etc) for that specific application. With something like the iPad, there is much, much more space within the design to work with, so that cost of miniaturization isn't there as much. Think of the original Macbook Air vs. Macbook. The MBA had to have a special, much smaller Intel processor custom made for it, along with much smaller hard drives, connectors, etc...versus using "off the shelf", mass produced mobile components like the standard Macbook and Macbook Pro. Now, this miniaturization cost decreases over time as the company sells more products/keeps the product alive for a greater length of time, which is why as you see a product stay on the market for a while, it's price typically drops (think Macbook Air and even iPhone). The iPhone might cost less to produce now, since they have been making more or less the same model for almost 2 years now, but I'd bet that the initial manufacturing cost of the iPhone was more than the iPad, because of the iPhone's small size.

anywhere that you can buy an iphone with a contract

AT&T Store - Mount Laurel, NJ (Corporate Store Site)
AT&T Store - Cherry Hill, NJ
AT&T Store - Lawrenceville, NJ
Apple Store - Sagemore/Marlton, NJ
Apple Store - Cherry Hill, NJ

Each one of those told me (with varying degrees of politeness) to pound sand when I asked to purchase a 16GB 3GS no contract. The Apple stores told me they do not do that, and I'd have to speak to AT&T. The AT&T stores told me that they never have sold off contract, and they never will sell off contract.

This makes me curious as to whether the iPad might end up getting sold via AT&T and subsidized. Might be nice for the price break, but I don't think I'd want to be locked into a 2 year agreement on it.

You should be able to buy a no-contract 16MB 3GS anywhere iPhones are sold for a price of $599 plus tax. That's the whole point of no-contract pricing. Note that it will still be locked to AT&T, but you will not have to start a 2-year contract.
