With the iPod Touch being released with 16Gb storage, and the 4Gb iPhone dropped, is it fair to assume that in the coming months leading up to Christmas (and the Euro launch of iPhone) that the 8Gb model will be joined by a larger 16Gb model ??

it seems very imminent.

but it would bring forth a lot more whining and crying.

when is the european launch?

I'm debating whether I should refuse shipment of my 8GB refurbished iphone and wait for the 16GB model.

I think a 16GB model will still sell for $399. But I'd imagine doubling the storage would increase the cost and price substantially.

a 16 gb iphone that sells for the same price as a 16 gb ipod touch? sorry, i really don't think so.

They will likely use the current price drop to move out the inventory of 8GB iPhones they have (the local Apple store completely sold out of 4GB last night, at $299 they literally flew out the door) and I would expect a 16GB unit at the $499 price tag in few months.

At these new price points, the phone really only adds $100 compared to the cost of the Touch alone.

I think this picture gives a good hint at the future! :)

I don't think Second Gen will be ready til at least the end of 08. For a new generation of phones there needs to be a lot of new stuff on them, not just two things like 3G or more storage. They need new apps, and some type of redesign to the UI to make it at least somewhat different than the current iPhone. I think at MacWorld Jobs will announce the 16GB iPhone. Same as the current configuration, just more storage. My guess is 16GB for $499 and the 8GB staying at $399.

Not really, Owners of an 8G iPhone, could buy a 16G and swap the SIM cards. Granted that the $200 price drop means that we will have to sell our iPhones cheaper, but it shouldn't cause any issues.

16GB iphone (with 3G and GPS?) will more realistically be priced at the $599 price point of the 8GB at launch. $499 for the 16GB is wishful thinking, imo, but I'd love to be wrong.

is the refurb store selling the 4GB iphones?

Ultimately I'm afraid we won't know until the iPod Touch teardown.

Currently the iPhone only uses (and has board space for) 1 Flash chip.

Does the iPod Touch use 2x 8Gb chips or a new 16Gb chip? IIRC, when the iPhone was announced, the 8 Gb chip was the top of the line from the Flash provider.

If the iPod Touch uses 1 chip for storage, I say the 16Gb iPhone is a definite go.

So if Apple has a 16Gb iPhone waiting in the wings, why didn't they announce it? My conjecture... since the Touch isn't shipping until later this month, the 16Gb would also be delayed by the same amount of time and this would have stymied current iPhone sales. I don't think Apple will announce it until it is ready to be sold. The timing may also be sufficient for them to hammer out their Euro plans and roll out similar gen hardware.

I would think the 16gb would be $499, $100 more than the iPod Touch, just like the 8gb is $100 more than comparable Touch.

I agree. The only question in my mind is 'when will this happen?'

I'm ready to buy an iphone (actually transferred my ATT Business account to a Consumer account today), but I'd rather get the 16gb version if it is released sometime in the next few weeks...

Anyone know the schedule of upcoming announcements? Or do you think this is something they would introduce without a public announcement?

my iphone arrived today and I opened it!!

wow...I guess no more macrumors for me until six more months! gotta stay away from all this speculation! it's already making me regret my purchase.

I hate to remind people but there are no current new releases for the iPhone. Remember that any changes to the "phone" aspect of the iPhone has to get FCC approval. They just can't add more storage to the iPhone without first getting FCC approval.

Apple can do whatever they want to to their iPods or Mac Computers because this does not involve the FCC.

If they were to release any new hardware changes to the iPhone, it would be public information and thus require 3-6 months advance notice.

The next generation of iPhones won't come until at least the middle of 2008.
Apple cannot make a surprise launch of new iPhones (not even by changing only the memory.....this requires FCC notice).

People have been over this topic before on these forums, and I thought the general consensus was that as long as it's the same type of chip, just with more memory, then the phone does not require FCC approval.

It's not like you need to take ur phone to the FCC every time you put a new memory card in it...?

They did it for the iPhone. Remember? Announcing in January, shipping in June.

there may be supply constraints on the 16 GB flash chips. Perhaps they can only get enough for one product line at the moment.

They have something set for the 25th of September, which is a Tuesday so I would imagine it will be some kind of launch. Either Touch goes on sale, announce 16gb iPhones, the WiFi iTunes store launches. Take your pick.
