This release left her screen unresponsive. The usual tricks to reboot did not work, and when we finally did get it to reboot, the screen was still unresponsive.

Plugged it into my mac and it immediately said it was in DFU mode, and our only option was to restore to settings...

We take backups, but not often enough apparently. We've been on the iphone since the original...never had this happen...

We'll both be turning off automatic ios updates...

It sounds like the better thing to do is to enable iCloud backups so that if your device fails- which can happen for any number of reasons unrelated to iOS updates- you don't lose data.

Let's be honest here, not keeping up to date backups is your own fault and although the corrupt update is an inconvenience, this could of easily been a nothing burger if you had that recent backup available. Blaming Apple because something went wrong with an update is fine but take some responsibility for the predicament you're in. Things go wrong, you need to take steps to minimize the impact when they do.

Did you see me not take responsibility for having the backups? Did you see me blame them about the backups? I'm mostly upset that we got lax about backups, literally because this happens so infrequently with Apple. The post is mostly to let others know the update is hosing some phones, I found at least one other on the apple support site with the issue.

Take more backups yes...entrust said backups to iCloud? No.
