Easy question -- how much space does the 17.3 OS consume in the iPhone Storage screen, as shown at the bottom of the list?

Particularly for the XS build?

My time machine is on the fritz, so I can't transport to September right now and buy an iPhone 16 to get more space.

In the interim, I'll have to do some shuffling and delete some things to account for the additional space the OS now requires, before I do the update.

I anticipate I'll have to free up at least 3GB to maintain the free space buffer I have now on an older version of iOS.

My XS states iOS 17.3, Total Size: 10.8GB

When trying to update I got the message that I didn't have enough diskspace, and that it required 7.something GB of free diskspace. According to the iPhone Storage page I did have more than that (10+GB free) -> restarted the device (can't remember when was the last time before that) and then the update ran fine (it also showed even a little more free diskspace)...

Worst case you can always hook it up to a computer and install it that way, then you won't need as much free space as OTA install.

I wasn't concerned so much about the space required to do an OTA update, since I usually use iTunes to install, but rather the space the OS files occupy after installation.

In my case, that figured turned out to be 9.74GB, about 2GB more than the previous situation, but it wasn't too hard to cull enough detritus to compensate.

And with all the additional features, 17 leaves only about ~100MB free RAM, and leans into VM heavily, so that buffer is even more important.

OTOH, now I find that iOS 17 apparently has a persistent issue preventing syncing with a computer, affecting both Mac and Windows, and new and old OSes, including the latest.

The crash reporting process, MDCrashReporterTool, stalls the sync process at "Preparing to Sync."

Killing the process allows it to continue, but I'm not sure with how much success, and fails to remove the logs from the device. FFS, Apple.
