My housemate and I both have Core Duo iMacs, but his always seems to run way faster than mine.
We're both 3D Animation students, so we're pretty much running the same software, which is mainly:
Maya 8.5 (new UB version)
After Effects 7 (not-UB)
After Effects CS3 Beta
Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 (UB)
On his 17" system, which has a gig of RAM and rarely more than 4 gigs hard disk space, he can normally render from Maya and After Effects at the same time, though he might not be able to do much else.
I have the 20" 2GHz with 2 gigs of RAM and always try and make sure I have at least 10 gigs of free hard disk space.
Right now I'm rendering a scene from Maya, and also tried exporting a video from Final Cut, but I keep getting "out of memory" errors, as well as the fact that the system can't seem to handle the two at the same time at all (compared to the other system).
The only other things I can think of that are different between our systems are that I like to run Last.FM, Google Notifier and sometimes Skype in the toolbar... But surely that should make a huge difference, when there's another gig of RAM involved.
Do you guys have any idea why my system runs so slow?!
