17" MacBook

Well, some one had to do it so I'll start.

The laptop I was really waiting for was a trickedout 17" powerbook, in a sexy new form factor, cost be damned.

Any thoughts on when we might see the smaller and bigger (13.1? and 17") versions of the MacBook? Would they HAVE to retain the same factor of the MacBook so as not to piss off the beta testers or can they get away with a new look?

And specs? SInce it wold be the flagship I bet the biggest machine would be faster. I have NO insight into when this might be available

I was actually kinda hoping they would even talk about a 19" laptop. And was surpsied that there wasn't even a mention of the bigger versions. For thsoe of you who say that 19" is too big for a portable and you are better off getting an iMac or a screen, loko at this scenario. I travel from country to country for 3 months at a time. I need something 'portab'e but not truly portablle. A pound or two here and there or size doesn't matter because once I reach my destination it doesn't really need to be mobile.

Part of me is even thinking of picking up a refurbed 15" and waiting for the new 17". BUT, that wouldn't be as emotionally satisfying s having something NEW and state of the art

So what do you all think? New form factor for the 17" ETA? And potential for a larger laptop ...

I really am not sure if I agree. I think this was a stop gap arrangement to get some real life beta testers from among the Mac faithful. Your average switcher isn't going to see anything new here - it 'looks' the same, right?

My gut says is that they are working on the REAL intel powerbooks as we speak with a whole new design and arhitecture to be released over the next 6 months. I absolutely don't think they can or will stay with the same form factor.

I think Intel is going to user in a new era and today was a stop gap. MACS have always been about revolutionary not evolutionary and by that token the macbook just does not meet the standard.


In fact the more I think about it, the more I realize that the MacBook Pro = the first G3 PowerBook, the one that came in the PowerBook 3400 case and predated the completely redesigned Wall St. models by six months.

As we speak, Apple (and Intel) are working on the "real" MacBook Pro designed around Merom. Six months from now we'll get a brand new enclosure and even more power across the entire pro laptop line.

I really think Apple's going to stick to the 15-inch for the Power- sorry, MacBook and make the iBook only a 13-inch. The 12 and 17 inchers were never nearly as popular as the 15, and it must help with production costs. They might put in more models in a year or so, but for now, I say you're stuck with one size.

I will take my 17" PowerBook to my grave... I love this thing... I really hope the 17" Pro Mac Notebook is not EOD'd... if that's ultimatley the case I'll stick with the PowerPc (okay... a little in denial... the 17"s not for everyone and we all know that, but some of us Love them and don't want anything less...)

While were on the subject of the new MacBook Pro, where is the nifty FW800, what about the nice speedy external storage options?

The "Logical" thought is that Steve & Co. are very aware of the floundering PBG4, and decided a quick fix; ie the 15" MacBook Pro, just to ease into the consumer outlets, till they can get the 17" stocked and available/perfected, until then the 15" will hopefully get more powerbook, oops MacBook Pro sales... I hope that by spring-september the 17" will be resurrected in glory with some awesome stuff in it's package; March seems to be the magic month for Pro Apps, maybe the Hardware will follow suit...

***Please don't turn the 17" 'Book into the Cube of '05...

My predictions are that MacBookPro is going to be part of a new re-branding.. so the new replacement for the ibook and 12" Powerbook - will be the

MacBook and will be single core 1.67Ghz (1.83Ghz optional) with 13.3 Widescreen display, 60/80Gb 5400 Rpm drive....

Replacement for 17" PB will be

MacBookExtreme and will be dual core 2Ghz, 120GB 5400RPM (or 100GB 7200rpm), 1Gb Ram, 256Mb X1600, 17"Widescreen


They may be 2 slightly different versions of each, much like the new macbookpro..

No longer two brands, just one brand that covers the whole intel laptop base...

MacBookPro obviously sits comfortably in the middle of the two..

yup, i'd love to get my hands on a 17" macbook. i will NOT buy a 15" macbook unless it's the only choice. i can wait for a good long time.

You apple people are quite blind...you keep thinking on the same formula of powerbooks and ibooks!! 15'', 17'' bla, bla,bla...

With the adition of the Itel processors, Apple will be able - AND SHOULD! - to produce a bunch of specific machines that EVERY PC brand has such as: multimedia and gamers! They would bring A LOT of PC users to Mac world!

One could say that with this Front Line + Remote control, the MBP is already a multimedia notebook but I should say that there's a long way to go until you can beat HP, Dells and Toshibas in this field!

Steve has always wanted a simple product line up, not multiple product catagories.
We might get a better intel laptop with the Merom CPU. In 9 to 12 months. Which is also the time frame we can expect the intel powermac. Intel will have all new CPU's out later this year, Core Duo is just the prelude.

i would assume that a 12 or 13.3 and 17 inch model come out. Apple pioneered the mini and huge laptops. I dont think they would only keep them around for 4 years. Consumers like options, and apple has done a pretty good job pleasing consumers (except for those who bought a final rev imac g5).

I'm pretty sure the 12'' PB sells just as well as the 15'', however apple doesn't release this info anymore. I think well see 12'' and 17'' PBs soon enough. I agree that the Macbook Pro is just a stop gap.
