My friend has a 17" MBP CD, stock.

Recently the battery has begun to swell. With this are a slew of other problems. The keyboard randomly types in wingdings or something of the sort. The clicker stops working. Random shutdowns, etc.

I immediately said to remove the battery, which is now what they do whenever using the MacBook.

The problem is that they are in a summer class and cannot survive w/o their computer or the files on it. I said they should at least invest in a second battery until they have time for AppleCare.

Some other problems with this computer is the screen. The screen has areas of discoloration, as if someone pressed on that area until it was permanently black. They look like smudges that won't go away. I'm not sure if this is from it being in a backpack or what.

Any suggestions?

That happened to mine. Brought it in to the Apple store and they changed the battery out. My battery was not on a recall list but something was definitely going on with it.
