17" MBP, now or later...

I'm ready to add a 17" MBP to my 'fleet'. What does the forum think? Pull the trigger now, or will the 17" get a OLED screen & faster 250GB HD's at the Sept. Apple event?

This will be used basically as a portable desktop system, with lots of storage onboard. Reading various posts here & in other forums I'm not sure how much the hard drive speed of the current 250GB drive (4200 RPM) effects performance?
 
The 17" OLED screens are probably a little way off (but you never know:D).

If you want a faster, larger hard drive, you can always install one yourself (although you may need to find someone's else's opinion on warranty issues). This brand new drive (not sure if you can buy it yet though) is 320gigs at 5400rpm.
 
Since Leopard is going to support blu-ray and hd DVD through DVD player, I think it is highly possible that apple could release a small update which would include blu-ray or HD DVD players (i know that there already are some slot blu-ray drives out there, not sure about the HD dvd ones). Apple is part of the blu-ray group but since there is no clear winner in the hd DVD media, I see them as proposing the 2 technologies as options in their stores. I think it would also make sense as media professionals have been requesting a decent backup/ media medium for HD content. Also, if the technology is available a LED screen update might be possible. These are slight updates that apple have been doing in the past years on other of their products.I also think that it will be a good way for Apple to encourage the hardware sales when their new OS is available by offering a technology that is only available through their OS.

Blu-ray. And there is a clear winner. 8 of the 10 major studios have chosen Blu-ray as their hi-def media, with only 2 studios going HD-DVD only. Then you've got Sony, Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita (Panasonic), Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, etc.

HD-DVD has toshiba and NEC.

And for people not wanting to update their disc collection because Blu-Ray is not backwards compatible like HD-DVD, there's the Sony prototype device that bonds together a blu-ray laser and red and near infrared laser,which enables the Blu-ray, DVD and CD formats to be accommodated all on one drive.

Offering up HD-DVD drives would be inefficient and a waste of time. The only incentive would be for the DVD compatibility, which Sony has already proven is not an issue. They did the same thing with VHS/DVD crossover. Players that had both drives. And this time it's all the same size disc and drive, not some heinously ugly VHS/DVD combo that disfigures a television set.
 
I did it now, couldn't wait.

17" MBP, glossy HD display, 2GB RAM, 250GB 4,200 HD.

I ordered 4GB of ram from Other World Computing to install once it gets here. Once I get past the 'there could be issues with a new MBP' stage I plan to upgrade to a faster, larger HD. Maybe the new 320GB 5,400 RPM Toshiba mentioned earlier in this thread?
