I'm a heavy RAM user (music composer) and am trying to decide if getting a 17" MBP would be a good replacement for my Powermac G5 2ghz DP with 2.5 gig ram. I would intend running eSata striped array for sample based sofware and FW800 drive for audio recording. Would then give me portable option as well as studio based.

Are the FW800 and FW400 all the same bus as b4 or is there now more firewire bandwidth than G4 powerbook as I would also need to run a FW400 based audio interface and when I tried this on my G4 powerbook while also running a FW800 HDD I had lots of Bandwidth issues.

My aim would be to then get a Macpro in the future to expand the studio but need to work out if the 17" is a good place to start. Other option is to do it the other way round but then I don't start with a portable option.

Any thoughts on the above forum friends??

I currently have a Powermac G5 2.0Ghz DP with 2.5gb RAM and i am upgrading to a 17" Stock MBP

I have compared my powermac to the 2.0Ghz Core Duo iMac in the house and they are similar so i hope for around a 50% speed boost on the MBP from the Powermac

and the best thing it won't weigh 3 St like the Powermac
