175$ for cancel the contract - but keep the iphone...?

don't quote me on this but i've read it only has to be activated once to be functional.

whether you could continue to integrate it with iTunes updates etc while still using a different carrier's sim card ... well i dunno.
 
Yeah, don't state you personal thoughts as if they are facts. There is no evidence that iPhone absolutely needs a active contract to continue functioning. Sure, out of the box it will be a brick till it has been activated with an account but after that no one knows.
 
Assuming the iPod functions would still work if you cancelled the plan....this once again this brings up the debate about whether it's worth it to spend $600 on an ipod.

Or in this case $800 if you include the setup fee and the cancellation fee.

I would say no. Just keep the plan or wait for the G6 iPod...or both.
 
I am so ****ing tired of hearing thread after threat about this stupid question...no you CANNOT activate, then cancel and continue to use the device. Apple specifically designed it this way. When you sync the device with itunes, i am sure it checks to see if you are still active with att service. it only makes sense Also, Why would you want to (if you could) buy a 600 iphone to use only as an 8 gb ipod?????
 
there are no facts saying it will or won't work once activated and then service cancelled, but Apple isn't stupid. they'll probably disable functionality after first sync without active service. i hope i'm wrong, but i doubt it. they're going to do everything they can to force people to stay on a 2-year contract with AT&T if they want to use the iPhone.

I will garantee you you can still sync without it checking to see if you have a contract. I highly doubt they will require an internet connection to be able to sync the iphone (after initial setup). What if you're somewhere with a laptop?

I agree though about how ridiculous it would be to pay 800 for an 8GB ipod.

For us in europe....

better a 8GB ipod for 800 than nothing...also i can use with Wifi...( I hope )

Really? Well riddle me this Batman. If the iPhone is a brick without AT&T then what are the 600$ paying for? With other phones I pay for the phone, and the cancellation pays for ending the contract and subsidy costs of the provider. Then you can use the phone as you like. What is soooo "special" about the iPhone that would allow two companies to sell you a 600$ brick in case you want to end your contract? What possible rationalisation would they use to justify that? Subsidies? No. Hidden costs for Apple and AT&T? No, the 600$ + all others fees mean they will be laughing all the way to the bank. So what remains, the pathetic visual voice mail and the secret sauce in form of servers behind the scenes that make them tick, perhaps? That sounds like pretty pathetic excuse to me.

I know people have a love for suing in the US so what do you think will start to happen when the first few people decide that they want to cancel their service for whatever reason and AT&T tells them that unlike all other phones the, oh so special, iPhone is now a 600 + ?? + 175$ brick, enjoy!

Would they not be obligated to write this little detail in the fine print somewhere to avoid liability? Something like contract can't be cancled or iPhone will absolutely never, ever, ever, we promise ever work outside of AT&T?

Dude, you havent got a clue whether the iPhone returns to a brick or not after cancelling the contract. Nobody has apart from those at Apple and AT&T. So stop preaching on those as if you know this for a fact.
