Shell isn’t totally buttery smooth, but yes I’d call it smooth. Bear in mind that I am running both monitors at native resolution and both are plugged into the eGPU via DisplayPort.

No, it is definitely not smooth and my eGPU fan ramped up. I really could care less about this though as I do not want videos in 8K anywhere or anytime. I am not certain what machine can watch that video smoothly. I am curious to hear what you find out on that.
Your mac mini can it also run smoothly. Simply connect your display not to eGPU but directly to your mac mini. That is what I'm not understand. And check how is your GPU load. If can do me a favor, please a 10sec video of the "shell" screensaver. I would to check this.
Just watched it in 4K and it IS buttery smooth with no ramping up of the fan. So what is the problem? That is perfectly acceptable to me! I am on 4K displays watching in 4K.

Yes I know, but I'm searching for the reason, why the GPU load is heavier on the eGPU on some things as the iGPU.

I understand your concerns, and they are valid. But instead of jumping ship on the mini, why don't you engage with the Apple engineers and help make this thing better?

I am certain that all the kinks with eGPUs is far from worked out.
