I found I can get a good a little bit of money for my used iPad 5th generation 9.7 inch if I trade it in to Apple. Is it worth doing this and getting a iPad 8th generation 10.2 inch brand new for $184 total plus tax ?

What do you use your iPad for? Do you want to add pencil support?

Are you disappointed with the performance of your 5th generation iPad? It's a good processor bump, but you'll have to decide your upgrade frequency based on your budget. Netflix and Facebook will load a little faster.

Is $184 chump change?

Yes it’s a big upgrade. Larger screen, more ram, pencile support, keyboard support and much faster processor.

It really depends on how you use it. If you are a heavy user, you would notice the improvements more than someone who is a fairly light user. I’ve upgraded before and concluded that I wished I had kept the extra money in my pocket. But it’s hard to think objectively about technology, isn’t it? It really comes down to your usage and desires. Upgrades often seem larger on paper than in real world experience.

Yes for Apple Pencil alone if you'd use it, IMO - I upgraded from 5th to 6th at full edu price (wife got my 5th gen) just for that, and it was 100% worth it.

Aside from the larger screen, Sidecar (assuming you have a compatible Mac/would use) and a fresh battery are also great selling points at that price. Wife is getting my 6th and I'm trading in her 5th for an 8th, for all of those reasons.

I just ordered exactly what you described. Delivery date is first or second week of November, unfortunately. Did you pull the trigger? If so, what was your delivery date? Thanks.

Mine’s fine too. But I figure I can get the new one for $200. No harm, no foul?

Yeah, sure. The iPad 8 would be great, and you'd be all set for future IOS versions for quite a while. Also the faster processor would have better longevity along with improved screen size.

Yep. Looking forward to it. But I was thinking it would get here in two days. Nope. A month. Oh well.

I just received my iPad Gen 8 from Best Buy. I was going to trade in my iPad Air Gen 5 at Apple but then found out my stepson broke his older iPad mini so I gave him the Gen 5. So far, after 2 days of use on the Gen 8 using Apple Pencil and Logitech combo keyboard I am very happy. I certainly notice the ability to smoothly run multiple apps at once and the iPad overall is very fast. Highly Satisfied!

Really either way would have been a good decision. Keep still well-functioning iPad 5 and save some money, or upgrade now and enjoy improved features and longevity.

Honestly, my 5 is fine. But ya gotta upgrade sometime, especially for the software updates. I went from the 3 (pretty much unusable) to the 5. I reckon I’ll be content for several years With the 8.

But adding, since my iPad 5 does everything well now, I elect to save the money and upgrade later to a future version, probably iPad 9. Especially when starting to see a lagginess in performance. But everyone has their own criteria on when is the right time.

I grabbed one today. $160 all-in after edu pricing, 5th gen trade in, no sales tax (thanks, New Hampshire!), and Apple Card daily cash. Honestly even coming from a 6th gen it’s worth it.

The difference in speed and screen size are quite noticeable so far. I will admit the extra weight and larger footprint are too, and 5th/6th gen are more comfortable to hold IMO. But worth the trade off and I think I’ll adjust. Felt the same way going from iPhone 8 to 11, having previously returned an 8 Plus because I hated the physical size.

No not yet. Still weighting my options.
