I have an antique 8Gb I phone (Edge version---assuming all Edge, non-3G, versions are 1G). I recently updated to 3.1 (which may have been a mistake)

I want to finally jailbreak. I've googled and searched here but only find help jailbreaking 2G & 3G iphones.

Is there a firmware when jailbreaking capabilities for iPhone 1G stopped?

Can I jailbreak 3.1 1G iPhone?

In my searches I heard a lot about carrier updates, which I installed as well. Did that have something to do with MMS? I still haven't received a pix message so I'm not sure if I have that capability. It seems there's much more to know about iPhones that I for some reason have been missing out on.

The original iPhone, which you have, is a 2G iPhone.
3.1 is only JB using Mac software PwnageTool. We are waiting on the windows software, redsn0w, to be updated to JB OS 3.1 - right now only 3.0 and 3.0.1 are fully jailbroken.

thanks! although I am finding conflicting info regarding 1G and 2G. Everything I read says I have the 1G and the "3G" iPhones are actually the 2ndGeneration (i.e. 2G) iPhones... 3Gs is then called the 3rdGen iPhone.

You did direct me to PwnageTool, however, which is very helpful, thank you! I didn't mention earlier I have a Mac so this definitely what I want (never thought about how people at MacRumors may be PC owners in this forum).

After googling PwnageTool, and clicking on the first link, I found this supporting evidence for my 1G claim:

"If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. "

It's true what people are telling you. Original iPhone is a 2G phone (GPRS, Edge), so people call it the iPhone 2G. If you want to also call it the iPhone 1G then you certainly can, but then you're the one that ends up confused.

2G - 1st Gen
3G - 2nd Gen
3GS - 3rd Gen

You can call it 1G, 2G, or Edge iPhone. When JBing, I would use PwnageTool and bump your root partition to 1024MB from the 512 it sets as default. You can also replace the Apple boot logo.
