I love that apple made a larger version of the iPad a couple years ago. I enjoy my 12.9 however the size has been a issue I've learned to deal with during some tasks. I notice myself not wanting to read books or magazines on it because i cannot get comfortable with it because of having to use two hands and when it isn't in landscape it is awkward. I like that i can do a lot of my work on it and i do not have to carry a laptop. In my mind i almost feel like the 10.5 would be the best fit for all the above and even make me want to use it more in general. I guess my question is would I notice any other benefits from the new 10.5 size/performance wise or in your opinions should i just stay with the 12.9? (the other thing i am considering is adding the wireless unlimited plan option to the new one if i bought it as i have the wifi only at the moment) Another pro would be that i could take advantage of the education buy a iPad and get a pair of wireless beats-- mine just broke :(

Performance wise, they both have four GB of RAM with the A10X processor (Aside from A9X in first Gen 12.9). But I what would suggest doing, is go to your local Apple Store or retailer, and get hands-on with a 10.5 iPad and see if this is something that you would ultimately appreciate over the 12.9.

thank you for your response. I have been in there and checked it out and do like it (for the short periods of time i used it) You are saying the iPad pro 12.9 from a couple years ago and the new 10.5 performance wise will be pretty equal?

Performance wise, it seems fairly similar to me. But I don't do a lot of heavy tasking or run Alot of intensive applications. So I can't attest to that. But I feel the similarities are fairly close with both models from my experiences.

From productivity standpoint I would rather have the iPad Pro 12,9 than the 10,5".

Performance is irrelevant on iOS devices in my view.

What workflows and applications do you need that performance is a crucial thing?
Performance is very relevant if you are doing video and raw photo editing.

Affinity photo needs the fastest processor possible and is great on the a10x. Lightroom also benefits greatly as well. In fact, Lightroom running on a a10x is significantly faster than Lightroom running on my 2015 13" MacBook Pro.

No they are not. If doing very processor intensive tasks like video or large photo editing the a10x can be 50-80% faster.

1st gen 12.9" has the a9x processor

I upgraded from first to second gen 12.9 wifi and also have the 10.5 LTE. I work from home so I use the 12.9 a lot more. I definitely prefer the larger screen at home where portability isn't a concern. The 10.5 starts looking small after an hour or two. If I could only have one though it would be the 10.5 because I have a 12" MacBook that would fill the role of the 12.9 for me. That said, the 10.5 is a much more portable device and I'm finishing up a week long vacation where it was my only tablet/laptop. It is so smooth, fast and portable that I don't miss my laptop. And I like the versatility a tablet affords while traveling (portrait/landscape and Apple Smart Keyoard vs on-screen typing.) No problems using the 10.5 on an airliner tray table when the person if front of you reclines.

But Lightroom on iOS has a fraction of the features the macOS Variant has.

For the feature set of iOS apps, nobody needs the "highest" available performance. Its a marketing trick: "Look, my car is faster than yours. But I will never use the 500 HP"

I fully agree on your statements.

Was I the exact same position as you and ended up settling on the 10.5” and couldn’t be happier. I bought my first gen 12.9” IPP when they first came out along with the Apple a Smart Keyboard and silicone back cover and I loved using it. But, like you also described, its size was great for desktop use but for about anything else it was just way too big and cumbersome. Reading in bed, taking quick notes working in clients offices, lunch meetings... it just seemed like I was pulling out this mammoth device which was overkill for the task at hand. I went back and forth between the two and decided the newer technology in the 10.5” would be the best fit for me and I sold my 12.9” model. I can honestly tell you, I could not be happier and I am using this iPad Pro much, much more than the bigger one and I carry it everywhere since it’s so much easier to handle. I also use some pretty demanding tools as an Apple consultant and CLE instructor so my needs are by no means mediocre. The Apple Pencil is more fluid and ProMotion is nice but not earth shattering. I never had a problem with either models performance as iOS runs great on both. I’m currently running the latest beta of iOS 11 and it definitely adds fantastic utility to this device. It is truly what all applicable iPads have been waiting for.

Enjoy either model you decide on but if you are like me, the 10.5” definitely is the sweet spot in size, portability and performance for a mobile device.

The first gen 12.9” has the A9X processor, so there is a bump in that, plus the ProMotion display is killer!

That is a totally incorrect statement.

Having a faster application when processing 42mp photos is important no matter if you are using iOS or Mac.

Also, Have you looked at Lightroom for ipad recently? Adobe has updated it recently to a stage where it has all the features that I use. There are still a few features that isn't there but they are not core to the application for me.

Promotion is a marketing gimmick noone will value when using the iPad to get the general work done.

Why does the Promotion display have anything to do with work? It's simply a feature that allows the display to be much more fluid with a faster refresh rate. The term "Promotion" might be a clever marketing term used by Apple, but it qualifies as a capability with the iPad being a 120HZ refresh rate.

Yeah, gotta disagree there. It's a noticeable difference that is obvious right out of the box.

How does it assist you get WORK done with your iPad?
For me, iPad is my mobile work device. I do not see any value of having a higher refresh rate (at least for the tasks I do on the iPad)

A more fluid display helps your productivity in applications like ... ?
I mean I do not know what you actually work and what your workflows are, but I have the impression none of you guys actually WORK on the iPad.

Please reread my original post to you. I'm not questioning what the Promotion display has anything to do with work related or productivity. You stated it's a gimmick feature that no one will value. That's false and more of a generalization. It does reduce the Pencil latency to 20 Ms for those who may use Pencil support for work related tasks or productivity. Aside from that, It's basically an enhanced feature that allows the display to be more fluid with the 120 HZ rate with refreshes. It's an incorporated feature doesn't necessarily have to be directly related to productivity or work, but makes using the iPad more responsive and a smoother experience. That's my point.

Not every feature is implemented to enhance someone's workflow in creating content. The iPad is an excellent content consumption device, Apple recognizes this and enhanced it even further with Promotion. Its a nice to have that makes using the iPad even better. That is not a marketing gimmick imo

I have both and you can't tell the speed apart in daily use with Ulysses, word, excel, mail, PDF expert, nebo, good reader or any of those other apps.
Size remains an individual thing, I like reading magazines/comics on the 12.9 because it's much easier to read multi colums pieces or comics imho.
Also using it as a notepad or annotating A4/letter sized pdfs is much easier on the 12.9.
Having both is a luxury that I enjoy thoroughly.
But if I could only have one it would be the 12.9.

I appreciate all of your responses! I do not do crazy demanding things on the iPad. I just use it to do some work related items. I also find myself wanting to read on it while i am out but end up pulling out my phone instead because as stated above its hard to sit comfortably and read on the 12.9 I think one of the main things as well is the fact that id be getting the cellular option instead of the wifi only 12.9 i have now.

I feel that the cellular option may be the decisive aspect here, especially since you said that you find the size of the 12.9" model uncomfortable, so getting the smaller size may be the right choice for you.

I got my 12.9" model for drawing, making electronic music (Sunvox) and writing, and for doing some work on it, so bigger is better for me, but I also have my Air 2 still and use the smaller iPad for browsing and reading PDFs in bed, while eating, sitting outside, etc. I think I would be comfortable with the larger iPad for those tasks too, though, I just enjoy having different purposes for the two devices.

Do you enjoy reading on the phone? For reading plain-text e-books, I actually prefer a backlit e-ink reader (6"), so maybe your phone is your ideal reading device anyway and you might want to keep the 12.9 iPad for productivity tasks? 10.5 is still rather large.

Thanks! I do not mind reading on the phone at all however the phone is kinda small for chilling at the house on the couch reading lol.
