SUCCESS!!!

After not being able to get the $5.99 T-Mobile plan to work for me (because of the pricing) I went ahead and tried to get the cheapest option I could find, and that turned out to be the $19.99 Unlimited MediaNet option from AT&T.

I found all of the details here:
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/12/finally-a-data-only-iphone-plan-for-20-month/2#comments

A few things changed sine that was written - nothing major - the biggest thing I noticed is that using iLiberty to do the jailbrake/unlock you need to choose the 'Unlock with 3.9FB' option - until I did that I couldn't get it to work.

Here's the other thing - it actually comes out slightly less than $19.99 a month.. I signed up using a $25.00 pre-paid, after you activate they give you a $10.00 bonus. And then you get another $5.00 if you add $100.. its not much but its 15% extra and gives a little buffer in case you want to do some voice calls or texting - its about 60 minutes worth of talking which is nice to have just in case...

Anyway - it works - I hadn't seen any posts stating whether or not it still did and I can verify it does.

Now, if I only have the nerve to try and upgrade to 2.0 and see if it stays working! (I have a feeling it won't, so I'm afraid to try...)

Don't upgrade to 2.0 yet!

After reading a few posts and doing some research I decided to take the plunge and try to upgrade to 2.0, I reada few sucess stories form people who it worked for... Well....
It didn't work for me and looks like I’m out of luck (for now). I just spend an hour and a half on the phone with AT&T and apparently the Pay As You Go/$19.00/month MediaNet option is not valid with a 1st gen iPhone running 2.0 I spoke to 3 people, one of which is an iPhone specialist (I was escalated to him) and he confirmed that 2.0 removes the ability to use the PAYG plan.

The only options are the regular 2 year contract or if you fail the credit check and do the Pick your Plan option (and pre-pay for that each month) – regardless, the cheapest cost would be $29.99 for voice and $19.99 for data. (the guy I spoke with was really nice and up front about everything, he did offer to credit me the $125 I paid for my pre-paid cards if I decided to sign up for a plan, and he noted it in my account in case I decide to do it within the next week).

I think the success stories I read about were people previously on the Pick your Plan as that is sometimes called pre-paid, since technically you are. (but its different from the pre-paid I did).

I haven’t yet decided what I’m going to do yet; I've been reading about downgrading to 1.1.4 but it seems like a big hassle.. I think I'm going to wait another week and see if/when the jailbrake/unlock tool is available...

So if you want to get the $19.99 data plan just stick with 1.1.4 for now!

Thanks for your very informative post. I'm also using a jailbroken 1.1.4 on a prepaid SIM, which I top-up every 3 months with $25. The only person who calls me on this phone is my spouse, so this data plan is perfect for me!

Wait for the jailbreak for 2.0! I think that will be your answer.
