Hi,

I have been given a 1st gen iPhone (firmware 1.1.4) with no SIM card. I'd like to use it as an iPod Touch. Firmware 1.1.4 doesn't offer access to the AppStore, though, so obviously I would need to upgrade.

However, according to this support note -- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406 -- I need the original SIM card to upgrade firmware, etc., on 1st-gen iPhones.

My question is this: if I jailbreak the phone, will that allow me to upgrade the firmware via iTunes without a SIM card?

Thanks

It should let you upgrade the firmware it just wont let you activate without a legit sim. Just run something like blackra1n to hacktivate and you should be all good.
