1st Gen iphone won't start

I have an original iphone (4GB) that won't get past the apple screen. I have tried resetting (holding home & power buttons), tried doing the same while plugged into machine w/ itunes running. iTunes doesn't even reconize that the phone is plugged in.
I'm hoping someone can help me fix this. I'm on vacation and the closest Apple Store is 200 miles away.
 
I tried all of this, still no luck. I'm hoping someone else has a thought. I've had it plugged via the USB cable for hours, so it must have enough battery by now.
